Not the laptop this time, I still haven't fixed that yet, but that's another story...

Brought home from work a Dell all-in-one computer which looks just like a big fat monitor sat on my table but with all the gubbins inside and a wireless keyboard. Been working OK for a few days through my BT infinity so I thought I would start to delete and change some stuff that was business related and no longer needed!

I got myself to the system area as all system restores had failed and I deleted what the computer was previously called (frontdesk) and named it Home1 then removed the domain (ca_aquatics) and clicked the dot in work group instead and called it Robin & Lisa and pressed OK. It then came up with a small window for admin authorisation which I knew the name & password for and pressed OK again.

It then turned itself off to reboot and now it doesn't recognise my username & password to log into windows after I have done the Control, Alt, Delete jobby!

I can't access anything!

I've stumbled my way into Safe Mode but no luck, everything I attempt to do in any mode this windows username & password pops up before I can get into anything Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Can anyone help please.

Sounds like a problem/feature on XP computers

You can either have the PC linked to a user name (normal home stuff) or you can link it to a domain (work business stuff)

They dont like changing between the two

If you are in safe mode is system restore working at all, ie can you get back to where you were before the deletions?

No, I can't get anywhere.

When its rebooting I press F8 like a mad man and get into the safe mode menu and I have tried all modes with and without networking etc but they all take me to a page with only XP as the operating start which still in safe mode the pop up comes back, con, alt, del and asks for a username & password but doesn't now recognise what it was before?

Might sound a bit drastic but if it were me and I didnt need anything on the machine I would just throw a CD in it and reload with a nice new clean XP SP3 image. If you need an image I'm sure that I have one somewhere. (Assuming its XP that you need)

If you dont want to do that you can find plenty of places on the net to download a free password reset disk (assuming this is the issue).

See I said it was XP, :)

Try this Boot your system to safe mode with networking option, this will log you on to the local administrator's account. right-click my computer and select manage, select Local users and groups, click users, right-click administrator (built-in administrator account), select set password, proceed. Put the password and confirm the password and click OK. right-click on the administrator and select properties uncheck the account is disabled checkbox, click apply and OK.

Does that do any good?

Phil, it doesn't matter what I try to open in within the safe mode menu and especially safe with networking, it then takes you to a page that only lets you select XP as the operating system, nothing about administrators account and as soon as i select that, which I must as its the only option, I get the same windows pop up asking me for a username & password!

Its a lovely looking bit of kit whilst its still in one-piece

Nothing on there I'm bothered about losing as all work related and I've closed that business down and it was only a computer on my counter wireless linked to the server and computer in my office.

Ironically its got a Vista sticker on the front but looks like it been loaded and running off XP?

Happy to start a fresh if Phil is stumped :mmm:

Try that username and password as blanks

Otherwise ill pm you details of how to download a password reset tool

Nope, didn't work buddy. Same error message "could not log you on, make sure you type your user name and domain and then type your password"

I've broke it ;)

I think you are screwed mate, do you have access to an XP disc, with product key?

No mate, all this was loaded for us by a company that I bought all my computers from and serviced them but now they don't exist so I've nothing to reload.

If you've got a disk and key for something you can recommend that I could use on my 2 computers (laptop & other Dell jobby) I'll do you a deal as I have a 18 month old back up thingy I'll let you have.

Nothing wrong with my Dell laptop or Dell all-in-one, I've corrupted the software and just need to reload.
