I wouldn't have taken the same course of action, but there's no way you've done anything wrong.

I love it when someone gets upset that I haven't conceded a putt - makes me sure that it was the right decision! Whatever format I'm playing, I always work on the assumption that I will have to hole everything and nothing will be given to me.

Op ..just what I would have expected from an experienced player.

Sowing the seed of doubt to an opponent is a big part of match play.
I would occasionally concede an unexpected put just to get inside their brain.

Yup - I needed to try and put him off his stride, and as I knew I wouldn't win the hole I took the opportunity to just sow a little bit of confusion - slightly change the focus of his thinking.

My concern was whether I was taking things a bit too seriously in a winter comp - and as he is a relatively new member what he might have thought of me (other than 'Scottish prat')

Ultimately, he won so your gamesmanship probably made victory all the sweeter.

People tend to only get upset about these things when the gamesmanship works and they lose. Did you explain why you did it over a beer afterwards? If it were me I'd have taken it as a compliment as I would have read it as you being put under pressure.

That should be a lesson learned by him then, you should never expect gimmes, id be prepared to hole everything.

I'd already mentioned to him on an earlier hole (before he played) that he'd tee'd up just outside the teeing ground. I told him to watch that as I might well have asked him to retake his tee shot if he played from where he had had it tee'd.

(See other thread on this subject - he continued to tee up on the line but after he noticed me checking he started teeing a gfoot or two back - but why oh why do some folks insist on teeing their ball up right on the line?)

Perhaps they need every possible millimetre of distance that they can get.

As others have said, I always expect to have to hole everything. If I've just putted up to close to the hole I don't even look over as I'm walking to the ball to see if they concede it or not. Just walk to the ball to mark it and if they say it's conceded then fine, but I won't even hint at asking if it is or not.

I will admit to being annoyed by something that shouldn't bother me though. Some people when you concede a putt will still knock the ball in the hole. Not as a practice with a proper stroke, but one handed, or back towards themselves, on one leg etc. A couple of times I've stopped conceding any putts to these people. If they want to put the ball in the hole every time let's at least make it mean something!
