I didn't concede

If there is one thing I dont like, its oppos questioning why I am not giving them a putt. If I dont give it, mark the ball and be quiet!

We all give that quick look, its natural. Its people getting upset or angry about it that is not right. I try to let it just bother them, another advantage to me. If matchplay is won in the mind then I want to best placed for that!

100%
Well within the rules but the scenario sounds like one where if your opponent was a forum member they would be on here complaining about a stuck up git they have just played

Well within his rights , & i would have no problem been called on anything once it is correct as the OP was , would make the victory a litle more sweet for me tho ,

In competetion I have never had anyone question me not giving them a putt in 40 plus years. In friendlies with mates we will have some banter over not giving short putts, but that is just a bit of fun. Hawkeye can confirm that after yesterday when we made him putt a little sidewinder on the 11th.:)

On our greens I tend to give slightly longer putts straight uphill, but downhill or putts from the side I tend to be less generous. Like SILH if someone putts to say 18 inches, I might get them to mark it if I am still to putt. I like to have something for negotiation purposes in case I leave myself the same distance.

Yep in a friendly its fine and I agree with giving as much grief as poss to my oppo. Just had a few over the years who ask why I havent given them a shortish putt in matchplay comps. If they want me to tell them I think they'll bottle it and miss I guess I can :-)

Hi Rich

You know our 6th Green - some nasty borrows and quite a slope uphill front to back - flag was RHS mid green front-back - I was 'flag level' off to the right.

I admit I did it for 'mind games' - partly for me around my putt, and partly to set up some uncertainty in mind of opponent (who had just birdied 5th after his birdie on 1st - off 17)

Sorry, I'm on my phone so can't get the R&A rules to come up. In matchplay, can you refuse a concession and carry on and putt out the hole?

I might be wrong but thought that as he just had a putt and left it 18" short he's well within his rights to finish it and get out the way. It's his choice to mark it or not. Unless Ive read it wrong

No rights to finish off - that's just something we do in casual play. He putted to less than 18" - I was farthest from the hole. Me to play.

You defintely want to be putting from below the hole on that green.

Of course opponent might have thought you were getting desperate already two down, and taken confidence from it. That is how I would have looked at it, though obviously I would have just marked my ball without any discussion. I like to think I know all the matchplay 'tricks'.

in singles you can go ahead and putt out if you wish too but it won't affect the score you have for the hole - that was determined when the concession was made.

in doubles, if you went ahead and putted after your putt had been conceded where it could assist your partner in his subsequent play of the hole he would be DQ from the hole.

I know a guy and when playing matchplay if he was conceded a short putt for a half, he would sometimes deliberately miss to make his oppo think he had thrown away an opportunity. Never missed one he was asked to make, though.

You were 100% right. Even if you only did it to wind him up (which I know you didnt). Its match play and anything you can do without being a to##er to get inside his head is fine.

He might have - I told him I wasn't sure how long it was - a wee white lie.

Clever.
And a wee bit evil !

Surely this would just fill the oppo with confidence next time around and he would make him putt? I'd rather have the putt conceded than have the slightest chance of missing it.

Op ..just what I would have expected from an experienced player.

Sowing the seed of doubt to an opponent is a big part of match play.
I would occasionally concede an unexpected put just to get inside their brain.

I was once told to concede only to a ball marker, never to a ball.

I wish I had heeded that good advice, stops rushed decisions and also is a good habit to confidently mark your ball as if you can hole anything!

Never heard that in 40 years playing this game.
Excellent advice I would adopt if I was younger.
I only play matchplay with the 'Vets' these days and we are very generous with 'gimmees'!
