I'm pretty hopeless with my 4 & 5 irons and was wondering whether i would be better off getting a hybrid, am i right in thinking that its a more foregiving club than a long iron?

Basically, what are the pros and cons?

Cheers.

If your swing isn't very good, it doesn't really matter what you hold.
Having said that, they are a bit easier to hit if you have a half decent swing.

I would say that while your hc is 26 there is no point. Play every hole at least 1 more than par to get down to 18. All par 4's are now par 5's and 5's are now 6's. On that basis why learn to hit a new club. Just play wi 6 irons and above. You will get to every par 4 (par 5 for you) with a drive and 2 6 irons. Work on accuracy and forget distance. Likewise all par 5's (6's for you) become achievable wi a drive and 3 6 irons.

That's what I did to get down to 18. Now I'm there and paying regularly to low 80's vie just started hitting a 4 iron. Not even bothered with my 3 iron until I'm a single figure handicapper.

The lower clubs are harder to hit so why boer until you have mastered 9,8,7,6 etc.

I find I have more confidence with a hybrid than I would with a long iron and that is worth alot imo. As for the actual club difference, as I understand it a long iron is a little harder to get in the air and has a more penatrating flight and a sharper landing. The hybrid is a little easyer to get the ball up and will land softer (better to attack greens maybe)

You will not be 18 for long! I am currently 15 and I have started to shoot low 80s too, if the course CSS was not 2 under the course par I would be 14 today!

Good luck in your quest, my wife has just given me the go ahead to practice lots when the clocks change so I can reach my target of 11 by the end of the summer.
