Got an HTC phone, can't find the model but it is a mini tablet type thingy (no, I'm not IT savvy). This afternoon it came up with no signal, I was in an area that I didn't know so assumed I had no signal. Now back at home, still got no signal. Have turned off & restarted, no signal, twice had the battery out & restarted, no signal, but notice when it restarts time & date starts at Friday 2nd January 1970 at 0100. Anyone any idea how to solve this or is it dead? Thanks.

Appears it has gone to a factory default - possibly also not seeing the sim.

Do you have a back up of the phone on a PC ?

Has the 3G turned itself off? Mine does this occasionally for no apparent reason. Restart doesn't seem to work, you have to go into the settings and turn it back on.

No, the phone is not backed up on a PC. Did clean the contacts on the SIM to see if that helped, no change.

Paul, if by the 3G you mean the mobile network, when I go into settings it says the mobile network is disconnected because service is unavailable and the slider switch is greyed out so it won't let me do anything. WiFi is on, Bluetooth is off by choice.

If it makes any difference, the phone is on the Virgin network, thanks for the responses so far, any other ideas gratefully accepted.

My thanks to the two sensible posters for their responses. Took it in to Virgin today who had a play & said it looks like the aerial in the phone is kaput, hence not picking up a signal. Put one of their working SIM cards in my phone, same issue, yes it's definitely your handset. Absolutely sure? No doubt. Can we check by putting my SIM into your phone? Course we can. Oh heck! What? Your SIM's not working in our phone either. Eh? Yeah, don't know what's happened but both your SIM and your phone are dead. Don't know what or how but the upshot is that I am currently trying to work out how a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini works and manually transferring all the numbers from my defunct phone…...

As for the old git

Its a bit like Ashes to Ashes, it knows you're a Chelsea fan and it's it's taken you back to a time in history, long before you had any money or success !!

No chance of that happening to your phone as there has yet to be a time when you had money & success to go back to…. :ears:

That's very strange for sim and aerial to go - how old was the phone ?

Have you had a power cut recently or phone in the rain ?

Yep, Virgin staff were surprised. Don't know how old the SIM was, older than the phone definitely as it came out of the previous one, phone was 26 months old, no & no to the others, phone's never been dropped, screen never cracked, nothing; was at an event yesterday, sent some texts around 4pm, showed someone else some photos, noticed no signal a bit later and it never came back. Now trying to work out how I do all the things the old one did & sorting out the settings, might have to work out how to back it up as well to stop ever having to manually input numbers again.

Have you got a Google account? If so save all your contacts as google contacts then it will sync to your account. As soon as you sync your new phone all your contacts will be there.

Thanks for the advice Paul, and after Selhurst Park this year he deserved it! :D (Not that I'm bitter……….)

Paul, I owe you a beer! Remembered I'd set up a Google account on the old phone, logged in after a password reset, transferred mail & lo & behold it's just transferred all the contacts, cheers mate!
