I've done this before but lots of newbies on here now.

It's a monthly medal and you've parred the first 3 holes
How would you play this hole and what score would you be happy with.
No OOB and no water

Would it's par influence how you play it (Par 4 or 5)
 
Wouldn't matter to me if it was par 4 or 5 as I'd probably play it as a 5 anyway. It's still pretty long even after a long drive so I'd aim to be on the green in 3 then hopefully 2 putt.

I'd be happy with that!
 
I would assume it's a par 4 based on length alone.

But ignoring length, par etc I would hope for a hole in one, failing that a two, failing that a 3,4,5, etc

Basically I'd try to take as few shots as possible. Like I do normally on all holes.


Have you put this up because of the number of replies to the Par5 thread stating that there's no point going for a par 5 in two if you can get 5 net 4 for 3 points ?
 
Pah......assuming its a Par4.......thats not as tough as our 16th, which has OOB all the way down the left, and very close to the green.

Anyway - it would depend on the Drive surely ?
A very good drive would leave you with a dilemma, - a bad drive makes up your mind straight away, and it becomes a good 5 on any card.

For me at least.
 
Our 4th is 465 off the whites and par 4, oob down the left and a mahooosive bunker down the right.

Always take driver and try to get as close as poss with the 2nd.

Only 3 pars...need to make something happen...reach for driver...325 yards...out of the toe, damn...still, on the fairway and only a PW to the green, easy swing, crisp contact...ball pitches 8 feet past and spins back to 2 feet below hole for tap in birdie.

In real life, what Macster said. Good drive would leave me a 5 wood which I can usually hit well. Short drive and I'd be laying up to a comfortable distance for an easy pitch. I would be very happy to walk off with a five so long as it wasn't the result of a 3 putt.
 
I asked the question because I know some people are influenced by what it says on the board.
If it says it's a par 4, they immediately think "this is a tough hole", try and make 4, take 5 and walk off miserable. If it says par 5 they think it's an easy par and are happy with a 5.
We also have a short par 4 at our place (250 off the yellows)
Long par 3 or easy par 4? Does it matter?

My point is your score means nothing in relation to the par of the course. It's all about how many times you hit it in relation to the CSS.
Don't be influence by the par of the hole. Play it the best you can and dont think "this is a tough hole" or you're beaten before you start.
 
Depends on the quality of the drive and the index - is it down hill is it up hill - do trees come in to play - where are the bunkers located off the tee. If i get a good drive away then getting on in two would not worry me

If its a par 4 then i would be happy with a five before the tee shot

(we can't all be 330 yard bombers like most of the boys on here :) )
 
Up untill a couple of weeks ago I would definately be looking at 3 shots to reach this on a good day, but in the last couple of weeks I have started to get my driver working and have been hitting pretty solid drives. I was just off the green on our 7th in 2 last sunday (Driver, 5 wood) it's a 465 yd par 4. As someone else said though it all comes down to the drive, anything left or right and I'd be aiming to be on or near green in 3.
 
As a high handicapper, my current aim is bogey golf. If I bogey every hole, I'm racking up the Stableford points.

Depending on a dogleg or not, it'd probably be driver, hybrid and (assuming the first two stay on land) a scoring club into the green.
 
Driver off the tee (assume its not been misbehaving in 3 pars) then hope to hit the green out of the rough with my second :)

Umm, think of our hole one, I have seen you hit a 3 wood and maybe 6 iron to the green, its about the same distance.

I would be looking to make the green in 3 but I could make it in 2 with some wind, I think I would have a better out come going with a short 3rd shot to the green and x fingers for a 1 putt. I would be happy enough with a 5 be that boggy or par.

Edit: I dont think I would be happy with a 6 even if the par it 5 as it would be an easy par 5 hole.
 
Looking at the length 470y is a long way for a par 4 and good for a par 5.
Assuming it's fairly flat and not playing 100y uphill I'd use driver, 4 iron then wedge close as I can to the pin and if i can 1 putt it's a par on a par 4 (probably with a shot therefore 4-3 for 3) or it's a birdie on a par 5.
If I miss the putt and tap in for 5 it's a nett par on a par 4 and a par on par 5.

If it's not a hole I get a shot on I'd still play it the same way.

I can't reach the hole in 2 unless I buy a hybrid or learn to hit my 3 wood so I'd always lay up to within 30 yards and wedge as close as I can and hope i can 1 putt or tap in 2 putt.
Damage limitation to 5 shots either way.

Looking at the hole length it should be one I get a shot on playing off 8.4
 
It depends on a lot of things Bob and since I play every shot on it's own merits it's hard to answer. The details you've given me aren't enough to really answer. I'm assuming it's a par 4.

This time of year I don't have the weapons to get there in two on a regular basis so it would be driver and lay up to 70 yds, my favourite wedge distance. I'd expect to make par 3 or 4 times out of 10 from there but I'd be happy with a 5.

In summer it depends on the drive, where the bunkers are etc. Off my h'cap there is no need to chase par here and I'm pretty risk averse where golf is concerned and only tend to take on shots I am confident I can pull off more often than not. 5 is still a good score for me here so I'd hit driver and asses it from there.
 
465 isnt a short par 4, and given the fact that im all level after 3 id be happy with a 5, afteral one over after 4 isnt a card wrecker. the length would indicate its a SI of 10 or less (im guessing), so id use the shot i have to my advantage if needed, if i bag a par to go -1 after 4 then all the bonus

Tee shot - driver, this would result in either a

boomer opening up the option of a 5w/4h to the green, even miss-hit will leave a chip on and two putts for a bogey, net 4

or a recovery shot out from any cabbage up to the 350/400 mark leaving me on in 3 and two putts for a bogey net par.

now if i walked of with a 6 knowing id wasted a shot id be a bit pi**ed
 
I would have to hit two Sunday best 3w & 5w and still wouldn't get there so its a 3 shot hole for me, but as a high handicapper i wouldn't be putting myself under that pressure to do it.

We have a 391 yard hole at my place that has a ditch at 200 yards, a pond on the left, a narrow fairway rough on the right where you cant see were your ball lands due to the trees so a good chance you will not find your ball, and a big pond in front of the green.
I play this as a 3 shot hole 8i 8i pw.
