I ended up being our comp sec at our AGM due to me opening my big gob and moaning about the lack of comp on this year(we apparently didn't have one). I am now trying to sort , what turns out to be a bit of a mess out with our comps. My problem is that it is like trying to run through treacle. It appears that our Pro, a young lad of 22, has been doing some of the organizing, but has been having the same trouble as I'm experiencing. i'm trying to be patient with the relevant people I've been contacting to try and sort out the mess but I'm getting very close to that Vesuvius moment. This will not help me in my endeavours, so has anyone got any pointers.
I'm even struggling with the Pro. He is able to change things on our website "Diary" and yet despite me requesting for a comp that is down to be played on a Saturday to be moved one day and played on a Sunday he hasn't done it. I'm thinking that he is holding back and trying to please certain people at the club who are heavilly involved in the running of the place. This is very frustrating.

HELP?

PS A suggestion to go and knock him out would be tempting. LOL

Firstly CF, I don't envy you your job, I've been a Comp Sec and you quickly find out that you can't please everyone and some days it seems you can't please anyone. But I think you've got pretty thick skin so you'll be ok ;)

In your shoes I'd get myself an Assistant Comp Sec, at the very least it gives you someone to bounce ideas off and also means you don't have to field every complaint, query or phone call. I'd also write out a set of conditions by which you intend to work (e.g. You should be given access to change the club website diary; if you can't get answers off people by a certain time before a comp then you have the authority to make a decision without further reference to anyone. That sort of thing) and present it at the next Committee Meeting. You're the only one who's stepped up to clear up a mess so you need to be given the tools and authority to do it. I don't see how they can refuse your terms.

Another ex-comp sec. Don't change the fixture this close to Saturday. You'll have everyone and their dog growling at you. You need friends before you make enemies.

Ask for a review with the sec and capt. Try an engage with them first. If you don't get some of your own way, walk away. Its not worth the hassle if its that bad.

It's not this Saturday, it's the first week of September. I asked him to change it on Sunday when I was at the club. Again , by e mail on Monday. Apparently the Ladies section are not impressed with him and have asked the question "DOES HE WANT A JOB?" in meetings. He's on thin ice. I'm after a new job!!! LOL

Wise words. First try to solve the problem kindly, then you can take more definite steps
