Which is the weakness in your game and how are you trying to improve it?

Duffs, the biggest bain of my golfing life. All due to being a 'scooper' up until the start of this year. I've gone through a fairly major swing change to try and sort this but it's slow progress. My focus is now my finishing position. If I hold the finish, if I'm up on my right toe then I know I've not held back on my right side and tried to scoop the ball airbourne. I'm now trying to achieve consistancy in my ball striking and get confident in my swing, once that happens i'll let you know ;)

Then there is the allignment issues, poor putting, slice off the tee if I try and go after one, can't hit my 3 wood off the tee or the deck with any confidence etc etc....

Still, keeps me out of the pub.

As a beginner I find it’s cyclical.

To start with just hitting the ball being a challenge but once you can get it away a reasonable amount of the time where it goes starts to matter but once it’s going in roughly the right direction you start to want to get it a reasonable distance (i.e. more than 100yds with a 3 wood), then just getting it roughly the right direction gives way to wanting to get it near the green etc…etc.

I get the feeling that it is always like that – one of the reasons the pro’s keep on tweaking things.

The how is lessons, practice but most importantly rounds. It amazes me how poorly good theory/range work translates into results on the course, for me at least – if what happens during a lesson represents a 100% improvement, then what happens on the range might be a 75% improvement but what happens on the course is at best only 25% better than before the lesson.

Thanks for the replys.
I was hoping to read more about how people are trying to fix their swing faults as per the original question

My weak shots hit the flangey bit higher up the clubface when hitting off the tee with an iron,

My fix is to try to think about following through with power down the intended line of stroke. I feel my problem occurs when I tend to cut across the ball slightly on an out to in path and consequently catch the ball off the toe. Dont know any specific drills for this so just try to go on instinct

the current work in progress is the variable swing, when it works it is good, too often it is horrid.

problem(s); right hand slides beneath grip, leaving right elbow nowhere to go but out and up.

fix(?); tee ball, grip with left hand, square club to line, then stand square to club feet together, move right away from left (and a bit back is allowed), take righthand grip making sure it is slightly over (setting some weight to right helps). In the backswing make sure right elbow is held inside as long as possible.

there is some improvement but at the moment trying to fix setup, address, grip and controlling the elbow in the backswing taxes my poor brain cell and I sometimes forget about breathing!

- this is almost homeric!

Where to hit it is the problem,
using the v-easy as an alignment is a big help on the range.
But how to put it into practice on the course is a big problem.
The chipping is comming on ok with v-easy and the putting is improoving slowly.

How I hit it normally determines where I hit it.

My main problems tend to be:
lifting my right heel to early (aparently this is a subconscious trigger to my downswing) - therefore I get over the ball and either pull & hook it. Or, hit low weak slices.

Swinging below the line, thus having to turn the wrists at impact to get square.

Leaving hands open at impact and slicing the ball.

To combat these I:

practice by standing with a ball under my right toes. This stops me lifting my heel.

Try swinging on a steeper plane - place balls on the groud behind the ball and try to swing the butt of the club over this line.

If the explanations don't sound right I apologies, but I understand what I mean.

The problem is a lack of direction and caused by a somewhat idiosynchratic move in the downswing. It'll be solved with several lessons and a lot of hard graft over the winther to hopefully give a firmer platform to turn against and keep some of the power from the backswing. Who knows I might even get my driving distance up towards 240 yards

Thanks for the replys.

I feel like my weakness is chipping.

I'm trying to improve it by missing greens and giving myself the practice

The irons is all about 'how' I'm hitting them

The driver is all about 'where' I'm hitting it.

The game is all about 'whydoIbother' with it.

:o

I tend to not transfer my weight properly with the irons, don't keep my hands in front of the ball, and often 'scoop' at it. I practise on the range, concentrating on trying to get through to a nice, balanced, finish, with my weight on the left side, but don't have any specific drills.

With the woods the weight transfer thing is still there, but you can get away with it better on the tee. I think a bigger problem is trying to hit the shine off the ball, getting my body too far in front of my hands, and leaving them behind and thus leaving the clubhead open, for a weak shot that starts right, and balloons off even further. On the range I'm trying to restrict my backswing to avoid a reverse pivot, then start the downs swing after a pause at the top. Then making sure I have the correct hand action through impact ( sometimes by concentrating on my hands, others by making sure I move my left elbow backwards during the downswing ).

Another problem with the driver is the balanced, proper finish, having just flailed at the ball like a whirling dervish.

I could go on for another page or two, but hopefully that's enough to be going on with.

PS what do you intend to do with this info, or is it just an excuse to get us to list out faults so you can sit there snug as a bug, whilst laughing maniacally at our inadequacies?

2 reasons really.
1. to help anyone who may not know how to cure their faults or are trying a wrong cure.
2. By asking the question, you might think about what you are trying to do and focus more on it on the course.

So what are you thinking about peoples faults and solutions...? Good/bad/ugly...?

Not that i'm trying to get free advice of course ;)

On the whole, their cures are pretty good. One or two are not so good but as I know they wouldn't take a blind bit of notice of what I say anyway, I just stay out of it.

If you feel you're still having problems scooping the ball,
the next time you practice, place a headcover a foot behind the ball. This will encourage a better angle of attack.

See above :)

I'll give it a try.

Let me get it straight first.
You swing too flat and then lift your right heal to start the downswing. As you are swing in to out, you find it difficult to square the face up at impact as your body turns too soon, leaving your hands behind(open)
Is that the jist?

I think so.

Certainly the right heal rises at the start of the downswing.

When looking on the camera my backswing is too flat.

Then I kind of raise the hands at the top in order to get back on plane.
Or, if I don't raise the hands I come in flat and block the ball.

Any thoughts on my problems & fixes Bob?

Has anyone suggested you take up knitting ?

;) :p
