Simple thread to start the day :D

Wedges take see quite a lot of use over the course of a round. Approach play, chipping, bunkers and the dreaded hack out sideways

I believe one manufacturer states upwards of 65% of the game is played within 125 yards making wedge play a key factor to good scoring.

With the above in mind, how often do you replace your wedges? And what is your criteria for replacing?

Do you go like-for-like or try something new?

I'm considering changing refreshing my wedge line up at the end of the month.
I brought a set of Mizuno MP T4's new at the start of 2013 and after just over of 2 years of regular use, I'm leaning towards a change.

I have no doubt that there is plenty of life in them, but my own criteria for things like wedges, considering the use they get is to change at around this time.

Now, sticking like-for-like isn't going to happen as I don't like the look of the Mizuno T5 wedges.

The most likely contender at the minute is the Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0.

How about you?

What are your thoughts on the frequency or criteria for changing your wedges?

Mine were last changed with my irons 2 years ago. Certainly some pretty heavy signs of wear (especially on the 56), am tempted to take a trip to ICY based on the feedback on here, would like a more custom fit of the grind and bounce of the wedges than is the norm elsewhere. May do that once the weather picks up

My 52 sees most usage of my 3 wedges, its only a year old so has lots of life yet. No hard and fast rule of when to change for me, just if I see something I like maybe or a good deal somewhere.

I can understand replacing worn wedges but refreshing with different models doesn't make the same sense to me - if you know them and love them then keep using them.

If you don't get on with them then they should be in the bag at all.

In my case distributing the impact point all across the full area of the face spreads the wear and extends the useful life of the club :smirk:

I've been using the Benross Zip It wedges for a while now, primarily because they're cheap, effective and have a nice lump of offset which suits my eye.

As for changing them, not sure, I can always be distracted by new pretties but wedges are something I don't change too often, as you get used to them and how they play. Looking down on the same ol' faithful does lend a bit of confidence ans familiarity. If only I could approach putters in the same way........

All but one of my wedges are the ones that come with my set of irons, so I would only change them when I change my irons.

I Agree Duncan, but finding the lofts, in stock, new, in the T4 isn't easy at present.

3 years ago I had Vokey wedges a 54 and a 60.
On recommendation on here I changed to the Ping Tour S a 52 and a 58
I sold these when I bought some Orca and had a 52 and 56 these wedges were
very hard to get used to and they Dug into the turf way to much.
I bought a Ping Tour S 58 degree again recently because I didn't like the 56.

I have those wedges now for sale and ive bought a Mizuno MP T5 54/12
and a Vokey sm5 58/4 being delivered tomorrow.

So not only have I changed wedges ive changed manufacturers and degree of wedges
and bounce.

I took the Mizuno out this morning first thing and its beautiful.
The bounce was good for the soft ground so im a little worried about the Vokey being so
low on bounce.

I just find whatever brand or bounce I get with a little practice I can use anything.
If the Vokey with its bounce is wrong I will buy a matching Mizuno and stick for a while[hopefully].

Currently using MD golf norman drew wedges and think they are great, especially when I paid £40 quid each.
Only had them about two years but I haven't played often due to uni and stuff.
But I think I might have to get the ping glide wedges pretty soon, they look so good.

4 on a lob wedge to pretty lethal to a digger. I have a 60-04 and it's pointless in this soft ground me to me.

I have 3 lobs.

60-04
60-08
60-11 with a wide sole. K grind. Great for winter. Haven't been able to try it in the summer yet.

Unless its worn down then I really cannot see the point. Obviously if you are not comfortable with it then bin it after giving it a couple of months. However if you like your wedges I wouldnt change.

I've had Vokeys and Callys in the past, within 2 years they were pretty much worn out.
I then went to the Pings in my sig' which don't appear to show any signs of use after 2 years.

Wasn't there a couple of threads last year about icy wedges?

If I remember correctly the guy built his own, but also brought old and battered wedges back to life, redoing the grooves etc...

If you like your current wedges why not give them a pamper back to a like new condition, cheaper than brand new and you get to keep what you like and trust.

Only had my Vokey about 8 months, but my Callaway 58* is well out of date now, and the grooves are really worn, so will be in the market for a replacement for that. Had a look at the Ping Glide's last night, and they're a lovely looking club. Will be having a hit with a 58* Vokey, Cleveland Rotex and Glide before I decide though.

The new ping glide wedges look stunning! I have only ever changed wedges when I have bought a new set of irons, so every 6 months is the answer to the op ;)
