.......from a ball once you have hit it a few times?

For example I played with a ProV1 yesterday for the first time and was very impressed, plenty of feel, spin and distance. Anyway at the end of the round all of got on it is a 2mm tiny scratch, so if I use this for my next round how much performance will I have lost from it?

Peter, not a direct answer to your question but I just stick with a ball till i lose it, thats 46 holes of golf the longest one has lasted.

Off your handicap you won't notice a thing. I only change my ball if its been mashed with my wedges or when it gets a little discoloured (normally two rounds + if I keep it that long) or if I put a big mark (hitting a tree etc) that becomes noticeable when I putt.

Put a new Prov-1 on the tee on saturday and it'll come out of the bag again next time out untill its either lost or cut up to the point where I think it will affect flight or roll. Then it goes in the practice chipping/putting bag for later.
I have had one last 3 1/2 rounds before. I guess it depends a lot on the clubs used to hit it.

I wouldn't use a "proper ball" for more than 18 holes, regardless of of it looked perfect or had minor imperfections.

I've used Warbirds and Nike speed/feel for up to 72 holes (bounce games) but in any serious game, it's out with a fresh beauty on the 1st and often by the 9th too.

It really depends how you hit it....knife it a couple of times then say adios otherwise I would say 9 holes in a comp then change to a new one....use the other for chopping around though....

I agree with the 2 above replies, If I were playing in a half decent game I would be looking to swap half way round.

In bounce/practice rounds i would use it till the cover had dissapered!

Back when Stratas first came out, I borrowed one from my pro, as he had said they were fantastic. So I played 5 rounds with it (miracle). The first 18 it went really well, second 18 pretty much the same, 3rd 18, not as long, 4th 18 tired, 5th 18, rubbish, it went nowhere. I gave it back to him, with the words, no good for me, they don't last long enough (and there was me using Titleist tour balatas, which lasted about 4 holes).

Now I use a ball for about 2 rounds, but always medal with a new one.

If every time you hit a ball with a driver, you squash it 50% flat, then it must shear inside terribly. 14 drives in a round, it must degrade inside beyond the point at which it recovers.

At our level I don't think it matters to much untill you get to a point where it effects the flight or roll. I will use a ball untill it's lost or gets 'demons' in which case its back in the bag (if a good ball) or in the pond, if its neither of those then its in the practice bag. I think that tour pros change their ball every few holes, so there must be a change in performance.

Depends how you hit balls and how hard.
If I am in a comp I will change balls half way round regardless.
Some golfers can wear out balls quickly, some can make them last, but either way they wear out. Im sure the ball boffins have worked it out somewhere in the anals of golf ball geeking.

I have never played 18 holes round my course with the same ball despite having shot reasonable scores like an 82, so I can't remember having the dilemma of whether or not I should change my ball before the full 18 are up!

I'd be chuffed to bits to get the same ball through 18 holes....but on the odd occasion that I do, I tend to class it as a lucky ball. I use this ball in the next comp, and I'm gauranteed to loose it within 3 -4 holes.

You're right, i think that I read somewhere that on average the pro's change their ball 6 times per round! that's a new ball every 3 holes!

but if you're not paying for them what does it matter if you change on every hole
