How many holes?.....

Twelve. Has to be twelve. 4 par threes, fours and fives.
For those with more time/energy go round twice.

12 for me too.

I'd go for 4 par 3's, 6 par 4's and 2 par 5's

And it probably would have been 12 if the chappies at St Andrews had originally done what the wise folks at Prestwick later did, and played over 12 holes instead of 18! :D

12 holes would mean everyone could get round in under 3 hours. No more 5 hour rounds
How often do the wheels fall off playing the last 6? :o

Gets my vote.

18 for me without a doubt, it's my escape from other things and don't think 5 hours to myself including playing and a cuppa in the bar afterwards is to much time out of my week to spend solely on what I want to do, after all there's enough in my week done for others I'm not going to cut short my time info actually get.

Plus everyone can choose already not to play the full course and if I get chance after work due to layout of our course I can choose to play 8,10,12 or 16 holes so if I didn't want 18 or if others don't want to then opportunity is already there.

That said some shorter comps could be a fun thing to do just not power play I thought that was awful.

I play on quite a long course par 71 6596 yrds (W) 6242 yrds (Y) with some walking between the greens and the next tee. The geography of the course means that it can be split as 13 and 5 holes and I quite often play just 13 holes in the winter due to the length of the course, its parkland and can play very long in the winter. They do actually have a winter 12 hole comp utilising those front holes which seems quite a good idea especially when the days are short, it works out as two par 5s, eight par 4s and two par 3s.

To anyone who thinks it should be less than 18

Please play the 9, 12 or 14 holes it is that you want then leave the course... then those of us that like 18 can enjoy it without you being there crowding the course.

Many thanks.

But it doesn't work that way does it? At my course on days when there are people playing 12/13 holes and others playing 18, those playing the shorter round jump across from the greens at 6 or 7 onto the 13th tee and the back five can get busy. I used to play at a course near work during the week and tee off at about 4pm. Holes 1 and 10 were next to the clubhouse and I'd find that when I got to 10 say at about 5.30, you would often get people starting on 10 and the back nine could sometimes get busy.

Lets go metric and 20 hole rounds.
I believe years ago that courses were indeed 20 or even more holes for a round.Just a thought on this anyone considered that playing less holes say 12 would reduce slow play as fatigue wouldnt be so much of an issue on the later holes.

I may be wrong but aren't there some 21 hole courses in America where the first three are 'practice/warm up' holes? - I like this idea!

Can you tell this to my wife, you'd think I'd punched her in the ovaries some weeks when I pop out for 9 holes

18 holes is actually a hostorical quirk so let's not get hung up about it - but I wouldn't change it. Plenty of 9 hole courses out there - and I know at least one 12 hole course (Shiskine on the Isle of Arran). At my club we have recently formalised our front 9 as a stand-alone 9 for members wanting to get a handicap but not enough time for 18 holes - so the 9 holes has it own 1-9 stroke index.

Jack's point I think isn't so much aimed at members of clubs - but at pay and play. So for instance should 18 hole pay and play courses be set up so that you could play 6 holes (indexed 1-6), 9 holes (1-9) 12 holes (1-12) and 18 holes. I'd schedule when various forms can be played but this sort of arrangement would allow those with less or more time to play Stroke-indexed sets of holes. Get a handicap and enjoy the game.

We have a tee time slot once or twice a week when the 9-hole 'course' is formally in play for 9-hole competitions/cards for handicaps. We're giving it a go - see how we get on.

i keep reading threads that give the opinion that golf should be played more quickly because it has to fit in with other commitments you have,if you cant spare 5 or 6 hours to play 18 holes and have a drink before and/or after a round then it is not the game for you, since when has golf become a first past the post fastest win contests,so who cares if you can do 18 holes in 3 hours then rush off to work etc then moan because others have the attitude that golf takes the above time and enjoy being on the course for that time ( not advocating slow play) not everyone is tide to a clock,if you just want to hit balls in a allocated time in between meetings, picking the kids up going shopping please just hit the range and let those who expect to take 6 hours doing our pass-time hobby alone.
