Big Jack has suggested that 18 holes for a round of golf nowdays is too many in this hectic world we live in and suggested we play less holes,I think he has a point. So how many holes should golf be nowdays? 9 holes? nah after we play 9 we want more so that wouldnt work, maybe split the difference between 9 and 18 so play 13 although dont really want to be stuck on unlucky 13 so 14? but surely golf wouldnt be golf without 18!!
What do you think guys....

18. When I get to play golf I want to feel like I've played golf. 9 holes wouldn't cut it. If people don't have time to play 18, they can always play 9 already. Daft suggestion IMHO

has to stay at 18 for me too. If people want to or can only play less holes then they should, nothing stopping them walking in. I often play 10 holes before work as that's what i can fit in, in the time i have.

If 18 was a round 9 wouldnt be would it  re-read the original thread....

No need to re-read it, you asked what I thought so I told you. If big jack doesn't think people have time for 18 holes, they can always play 9 and leave those of us who do have time to play 18. Which bit did I miss?

18 is fine, and without wanting to turn it into a slow play thread, slow play rather than hectic lifestyles the bigger issue. Limit the golf ball so that courses dont have to continually be lengthened too whilst at it

No reason we cant try living with both

Works in cricket and other sports that have a full size game and a cut down version, why not golf?

Imagine 9 hole comps on a busy Saturday (especially winter) or in an evening etc

We have a summer comp, each thursday for 8 weeks over 9 holes, starting at 6pm-ish - assume other clubs will be the same and a decent option for a summers evening, wouldnt want to see main comps go that way (not a huge fan of T20 in cricket either mind lol)

Was talking about this with my mate and we decided 12 holes would be good

Sometimes 9 doesn't feel like enough but 18 seems to take up too much of your day

Agree, I think it would take some years to gain a credible amount of acceptance but like cricket it would find its niche and also like cricket it may prove to offer a new challenge to the 18 hole game testing specific skills & course management etc that playing the 18 hole game demands a diff approach with

edit: I guess we need a TV station to throw money at a 9 or 12 hole series and it'll take off after that

I usually just play 9, sometimes 12, maybe it's because I'm just getting practice in and have joined a club so don't need to get my money's worth like I'd feel if I had to pay on the day. 18 holes just feels like too much, zig zagging around each hole doesn't really help though.

We have a summer supper club every Wednesday. Nine hole event running from 4.00pm onwards for those wanting to play after work. Run like a society and so has its own handicap. £3 entry winner and second place and there is a separate supper club menu on offer for those who want to buy a meal after. Works well.

Personally I prefer 18. Its like playing foursomes. I always come away from these thinking I've only had half a game. I make sure if I'm playing golf I've got time to play, enjoy a drink after and not be looking at my watch all the time. Surely like everything its about finding a balance

To anyone who thinks it should be less than 18

Please play the 9, 12 or 14 holes it is that you want then leave the course... then those of us that like 18 can enjoy it without you being there crowding the course.

Many thanks.

Rather than holes it would be better to cut distance.

A set of very forward tees on some holes to take out sections that cause slow play from the tee (lakes, OOB, trees).

You could play this shorter course more quickly, lose less balls etc.

Unless all groups were doing it there would be an issue about being let through on almost every other hole though!
