how long till your drives were consistent?

it was very windy though ;)

I get what you guys are saying. I should lower my expectations of what I can acheive. Still, wouldn't it be great to be able to hit it like Bubba watson eh?

I wouldn't lower your expectations, just be realistic.

The driver is the most difficult club to hit imo.

I am a massive fan of the 3wood off the tee as it holds the flight alot better and I find alot of the fairways with it, and if i've still got a fair distance to go i'll smash it again.

I have never been confident with a driver in my hands as I find that the face and clud head is far too big, thats a personal thing though. I can shape the shots etc. although as I am getting more dangerous out on the course now I am pulling the 3 wood out far more than I ever thought I would.

As the other lads have mentioned, the World No.1 doesn't get it right all the time.

Ash!!

I've always liked the idea of a 3 wood with a huge driver-sized head on it. In fact, most of the drivers I use nearer in loft to a 3 wood than a driver. Might explain why a) they don't go so far and b) I hit a lot of fairways. :o

I have been playing for just over two months, and although I can hit my irons consistently (not brilliantly mind) my drives are not consistent at all. Sometimes, when I am hitting well, I can drive really well for say nine holes, but then it all falls apart.

How do you get over this?

what time scale should I give myself to become better with my driver, keeping in mind I am a competative person.

Cheers

James

Define "consistent" , even the pro's reload every now and then !!

Sounds good.

For me I am a major fan of smaller headed clubs. As such the Nike VR Pro fairway woods are traditional in size and looks and go so well.

I reckon I can only get about 25-30 yards more out of my driver vs. my 3 wood. I'll take the penalty for it being on the fairway all day long.

Hi guys

Just joined and thought this was as good a place as any for 1st post!

Been playing 3 years now and drives were very erratic and at times I just used a hybrid off the tee. distances varied from about 150-200yards (wind assisted!)and often with a bad slice. Tried various methods to improve and was tempted to go for further lessons, but recently clicked on Tom Watson's 'secret to the golf swing' on YouTube. After watching that, thought 'I'll try that at the range' - wow! what a difference! I was suddenly driving around 220-250 yards, and most were fairly straight. All because of a change in the way I turned my shoulders back and through. I also loosened my grip recently after reading some tips on here.
I tried it on the course, and have managed to outdrive my previous efforts considerably.
As for consistency - still have some duffers (managed to top one 10 yards into the rough last night!), and the odd slice but certainly improved overall. On the 18th last night, a 361yard par 4, downhill with a good wind behind, my drive flew straight and landed about 10yds short of the green to the amazement of my playing partners (and myself).

Now if I can sort out my pitching, chipping and putting, might be able to break 95!

Sorry for long 1st post just thought it was worth a mention. will try and post a link.

Well it took a bit of getting used to, just to make sure I was turning the shoulders and not just the arms, but for whatever reason I am hitting the balls from the sweetspot more consistently (was a regular heel contact previously), and I just need to concentrate when out to make sure I keep this going, as it is easy to slip back to my usual style!

It fades in and out for me - I'll hit a few well and think I've cracked it and then bang - massive slice. Then I'm wondering where that come from and how long it'll take to fix.. again!!

Welcome Neil.

If the Tom Watson video is the one I think it is, I approve.
In fact, I've spent all day trying to sort it out.

I just try and get it straight if I can. Not a long hitter anyway and have no illusions of ever being so. Give me 230 yards and 9/12 fairways hit and the other three in the light rough and that would do me week in week out

Thanks for the welcome !

I've not sorted it out fully myself, but it definately makes a big difference for me when I get it right, and just helped me understand the 'coil' thing. Good Luck :)
