I have been playing for just over two months, and although I can hit my irons consistently (not brilliantly mind) my drives are not consistent at all. Sometimes, when I am hitting well, I can drive really well for say nine holes, but then it all falls apart.

How do you get over this?

what time scale should I give myself to become better with my driver, keeping in mind I am a competative person.

Cheers

James

haha at least I am not alone then.

100 balls at driving range last nite. There were a few others playing too, and I could drive them all, when I hit a good one. If I can get my consistany I think I will start enjoying golf on a whole other level. Until then I guess I just keep on practising.

Dont take this the wrong way, but you never get there in golf, dont ever think you will get to a point where it all works forever because you will not.

On a lighter note thats what makes it so good

Not sure this will every happen actually!

I started playing late last year and whilst my driving has improved considerably, I wouldnt dream to think it consistent. You never know when that slice or hook might come into effect just by changing something slightly.

Mine are consistently better though, if that helps?

I'm still waiting after 25 years! :D

If you can find the fairway or light rough around 60-70% of time, then that's great in my book....

What handicap do you play off James? I heard Luke Donald say the other day that he finally knows exactly where he wants to put it on the fairway and it 'normally' ends up there now. This guy has just reached No.1 but if you look at this http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/info/?02421 he is T64 for Driving Accuracy from the centre of the fairway!

What you have to remember mate is that we ALL want to drive it to the centre of the fairway and I'm sure that the lower handicappers do it more frequently than the higher handicappers, but if you basically want to drive it straighter. Lessons, practice, practice, practice!!

Good luck ;)

Did you see Luke Donald over the last few at Wentworth he had to put the driver away as he didn't have a clue where it was going.

Golf is always a work in progress you never finnish it

I'm probably driving the ball better this year than I ever have, but I could still turn up on Sunday and miss every fairway.

Consistency and golf aren't words that are often associated with the amateur game.

depends how many you go at like and axe murderer and how many you just swing at.

Im noticing for the first 3 drives on my current course i hook, because im trying to go mad. Step back chill out and just swing and im splitting the following 10 fairways. its only ever ones that i really try and go at that a foook up. lesson learned.

I just want to hit it straight. FIRs are what I'm after, not 100% accuracy.

I have to admit, when I just swing I hit it alot better, but I don't get the distance I would like. When I add power, I can get over 200 yard, but the accuracy greatlty falls.

I guess with me being a begginer (no handicap yet) I wasn't sure of what I should be expecting with my drives.

consistent driving will never happen. did you watch the golf last week? luke donald the world number 1 hit numerous drives into the thick stuff. if he's doing it then we are all doomed

it was very windy though ;)

I get what you guys are saying. I should lower my expectations of what I can acheive. Still, wouldn't it be great to be able to hit it like Bubba watson eh?

How long is a piece of string. My driving is fairly consistent, but if I hit it 40 yards further, it wouldn't be.
Consistent enough to play to 18? not too hard, just don't end up in too much trouble
Consistent enough to play to 9? getting harder
It's not the quality of the good ones, it's how bad the bad ones are and what they cost.
