After weeks of rain and perfect growing conditions how bad is the rough at you home course?

There have been a few posts recently about how bad things are getting, but where is the deepest you have played?

I thought, my home course Nairn was pretty bad with some bits being at least 2-3 feet deep in parts and with the heather just about to bloom very easy to lose balls. On Saturday I watched the 3 ball in front of me who were two four handicaps and a 2 hit 8 balls off the tee between them on the 16th. It’s been bad since May which is a t least two months earlier that usual.

When I played Carnoustie at the beginning of July, that wasn’t that bad despite the starter saying the course was set up tough due to the British Ladies Amateur being the day before.

I played at Tain on Tuesday night with a friend and that was the deepest ive ever seen on a golf course. Rob is only about 5ft 5 and a couple of times when he was looking for his ball in the rough you couldn’t see him!!!! Despite wearing a bright red shirt.

Some must have been 6 ft deep!!
It was, after the first few fruitless attempts looking for the ball a waste of time so we just hit a provisional if it went in a didn’t bother looking.
The only way you would find it would be stepping on the thing, and you would have no chance of a shot.

Apart from that course was in excellent condition thought.

So how deep is the rough at your home course?

The rough at our course isn't too bad.

Just off the fairway it's about 2". Just about that length where if you go in you cant see your ball until you get to it.

A bit futher back is a little more penal. I flew a green with a 6 iron, well, pitched on and bounced off the back, into some of the thicker stuff.

That was probably about 2ft deep.

I've found the Roughs not just long , it also seems thicker and denser, it like trying to hit it out of barbed wire at the moment.

Same here. Whilst there is plenty of knee deep cabbage if you go too wide, what I'm struggling with is the sheer thickness of the second cut. It's not that long, but boy does it take some muscle to get through!

Our course is tree lined as its protection but recently the rough has grown, so that in the trees you are likely to get a 2 shot recovery, as you can't just knock it out to the fairway as you normally would

there's the rough to avoid, the rough, and the semi on our course.

the first is aesthetic and normally dry, spindly and thinner when you get up close to it ie you stand a good change of finding it, need to avoid twisted club when playing out. However, this year it's got a base layer of lush growth that means it's normally lost, and even if found it can be impossible to play more than 10 yds...

the rough layer is about 2-3 inches but very very lush and strong - if you know where to look you will find it (eventually) but it's more 8 iron than hybrid time!

the semi is also causing problems - you find it easily but you can't ignore it in your club selection most times.

all told it adds up to problems if you miss the fairways

Not that long at my place. Something to do with the type of grass. I'm told. Around 8" long. But its sooooo thick. There is no chance of finding your ball in it. Its a case of play with old rubbish balls, or keep it on the fairway. I do the first option.

Far far to long is the answer at our place at the moment.
Ours is quite a mature course , so unite tight and tree lined, so it's bad enough going out sideways when you miss the fairway, let alone potentially losing a ball!
There is literally no need for it to be this long....

At my course, a links, the rough is impossibly thick even a few feet off the fairway. It has thin fairways and only one cut of rough before the maram covered dunes:(

Short of borrowing a combine harvester, what could they cut it with?

Why cut rough? It is what it is, and the height is determined by the weather.

The rough at my course is so long that I have just bought a load of cheap balls to use when I am out on my own. You do not have to go far off the fairway to get into the heavy stuff and when there is no help to find the ball you can pretty much guarantee that it is lost. It was starting to get expensive.

At the moment, if you miss the fairway off the tee then you are well advised to take a provisional at the moment.

you need to keep an eye out for adders! where the summer has been later (read non existent) their venom is stronger than normal due to fermentation where they have been in hibernation for longer.

Deep, deep, deep - and thick. I keep saying to folks '"it's for decoration - not for playing in - so keep out and don't damage it". But no. Swish, biff, bang as normal - into the rough - hunt, hunt, hunt. Lost. A medal round two weekends ago - my two playing buddies lost 8 and 4 balls. As much as I love 'em dearly I got completely fed up hunting for their golf balls - every single hole - and usually both of 'em.

To the point that on the 14th I hit one into the rough off the tee and just couldn't be ar**d hunting for it. So quick cursory look - then as it wasn't sitting there waving to me shouting "here I am" I declared it lost. Was saying to myself "please guys - just keep it on the short or shortish stuff anyhow. Just not in there - again - oh bugger - off we go again" Ah well - that's golf. And God knows what it's going to be like when the heather is in full bloom in a few weeks.

Water! Water, I need water! It's taken me 3 weeks to find my way off the course.

In truth, the Green's Staff have been cutting it and thinning it out but its is still pretty dense. Needless to say they are getting stick for it but in reality short of being out there through the night its just growing quicker than they can cope with it AND the rest of their jobs.

the greenkeepers at my place have been trimming the rough since sunday, it's now down to about 3", but very dense, if you find the ball buried it;s difficult to get out.
