Have one of those wristband that also counts steps. I never use it, but decided to take it for a spin while I went out for a cheeky 9 holes. Now the experts say one should do 10K steps everyday. The count on the fitband was 0 when i jumped into the car. When i came home it had registered a princely 7782 steps for the 9 holes. As I am no good at golf, I did use a lot of the course today while hacking around.

Moral of the story, play about 11 holes everyday and you will be fit as a fiddle...

how many steps rack up during practice routine and swing? I would think you may only of actually of walked 60% off the recorded steps over 9 holes, which would equate to approx 5000yards

HID has been doing the 10K a day plan for over six months. She has lost weight although that has been in conjunction with a healthier diet. Steps will help but they aren't the only thing necessary if you want to get fit.

Dont let facts get in the way of a good story

I've lost 2 stone since I started playing golf again and am MUCH fitter than I was before.

when i was a more regular weekend golfer, I did lose a fair bit of weight, now I dont play as much due to other commitments.. So i lose more balls than weight.

As most golfer waddle around at around at less than 2 mph for a 4 hour round, no beneficial form of exercise is gained.

That's quite clearly nonsense

Whilst golf isn't the more aerobic of sport to get the blood pumping it still has a fitness benefit especially when walking well over 10'000 yards every time someone plays.

What does offset for a number though is the halfway hut and clubhouse food and drinks

I would disagree. It's not the greatest aerobic exercise but surely any form of exercise (and which is why the 10K steps per day has been popular) is helpful but it needs more than that if someone wants to get truly fit. That would include proper cardio vascular exercise, good diet etc

Just depends how active you are during you're working day. If you sit on the behind all day in-front of a screen, then a round of golf will be good exercise. Not so much for someone with an active job.

The attached image is of one of my night shifts a few weeks ago. A round of golf is not good fitness for me, its just a walk. Nothing more

walking 6 miles is walking 6 miles no matter how you look at it. to say it isn't exercise is nonsense.

the reason why a lot of old boys at my place are still stood upright is because of golf!

Thats what i thought... but had an interesting data point. that shows something else.
We tee-ed off at 1.

12:55: Arrived late as the course was empty and my heart rate is the lowest as it hits 70. Quick change of shoes in the car park and straight away onto the course

1pm - 15:30 when we wound up everything and sat back in the car.. My heart rate does not dip below 100 at any point.

My BPM since i was hope drops back into the 80s & 90s. (The fitbit is being worn by by someone else since and hence data not important). I agree that golf is no cardio exercise, but to kick it away completely may not be valid either..

6000+ some odd yds, up hill and down dale with a bag full of golf clubs slung over my shoulders on a regular has certainly made a vast improvement to my fitness and stamina regardless of anyone else's experiences.

Anybody with a rough idea of what the average bag full of clubs weighs out of interest, gotta be what maybe somewhere around 35/40lbs ?

I weighed myself with and without my bag once and got like 12 kg so like 26 lbs.

Including walks between holes, our golf course is about 5.6 miles round to play the full 18 holes. Measured by the odometer function on my GPS watch btw. Walking that distance can't do you any harm! :)
