Having read "THE" thread and seen various replies from those who say they know,it appears that there is a formula for calculating maximum distance based on Swing Speed,Shaft Flex, etc. If this is correct, what is the maximum distance that a driver with a regular flex shaft (lets say reg Prolaunch blue) could hit the ball, using optimum swing speed, launch angle, etc ?

Certainly witnessed 340yder in calm conditions. 370 slight wind assisted.

Benross 12* Quad w NV65 R at 44" (maybe 43.5).

Don't see there's absolute connection between those attributes. Every swing is different - there's another thread that demonstrates that!

Another Rule of Thumb (cf Law!) is that you should play the softest shaft you can control - why I play Stiff!:o

An optimised setup should have ball speed of very nearly 1.5*SS whether R or XXX. Dispersion (variance from target line) from R will generally be greater than stiffer shafts, specially at higher SSs. If you hit it long you've got to be exponentially straighter than e short-knockers!

Does it matter though. Are you talking about a hypothetical maximum distance or just based on your game. I think most golfers could get more than sufficient distance if their swing suited a regular fitting and it's about playing the next from the short grass and not the trees

300 yds is quite possible with the reg Prolaunch blue you mentioned or the Prolaunch red

Bob, is that carry or total? I suppose, to answer my own question, if its the middle of a dry spell on a rock hard clay surface...

There is a relationship between swing speed and distance, because that is dictated by the laws of physics (taking into account prevailing wind, temperature and so on).

There is no upper limit that a player could hit a regular shaft because it depends really only on their ability to square the face of the club. I have seen a Tour pro hitting a driver which had a ladies shaft put in in place of his extra stiff one, and because he had great tempo and timing, he hit it just as straight as his own driver and a bit further and higher.

according to titleist's website ben crane uses a bassara shaft in his driver, which i think is very flexible shaft, designed more for women players

i guess you can hit a regular flex pretty far, depending on your swing dynamics

Bassara is a lightweight mid launch lowish spin shaft but you can get an X flex in it, and in Ben Crane's case the Titleist Tour Van could stiffen it further as needed. Trust me, I doubt most of us could handle it.

I think he also uses a 7.5* driver loft.
