How far do you hit your clubs

I agree when it turns into a willy waving contest with all the short hitters calling the long hitters a liar.

In the OP's context I think it's a fair question though. It's useful for an inexperienced golfer to know how their distances compare to other players.

Your distances are about the same as I guy I play with off 10 (and has been to 9).

As long as you keep the ball in play you can get a lot lower than you are now without gaining distance. If you can get longer without losing what you have then go for it because it definitely helps, but you don't NEED to be longer than you are to improve your scores.

Yup i was half joking, but this thread has an inevitable conclusion, it will run and run and on page 20 the following will have happened

1. Hacker claims 280 yard 3 wood
2. Many claim BS
3. LONGDRIVER will join the forum purely to announce his 370 yard drives
4 More claims of bs
5 He will later reveal himself as a Lder (Seems to be a common process this on forums)
6. Many people will reference their long hitting buddy who hits it 300 and they hit it just past him
7. Anyone claiming a long distance will qualify it with a standard disclaimer (My putting is crap though, LOL) etc
8. Someone will be told he should be on tour
9. The average of all posters will be closer to 300 yards than 200 yards
10 Long hitters (On the forum) will proclaim they would be happy to sacrafice 20 yards to hit it straighter (As if these things are choices)

Etc

P.S i hit my 7 iron, often

Not dissimilar distance's to me and I've been round our back 9 in level par before, distance certainly helps but a sharp short game will save you shots, also keeping it in play off the tee. Gapping at the top end i wouldn't be too concerned, I've yet to play with people who hot the green from 200 yards +, get it up around there and let your short game take care of things.

My old man will average 200 yards with his driver
Hits the fairway a LOT
plays a course that is 6600 yards and with little roll
8 handicap
He is in his mid 60s

A consistent 200 yard drive can see you scoring pretty well, he will score the odd 75 on this par 72 in competition

I hit a 300yd drive once.

1979 it was. Middle of a very dry spell. Downwind. Downhill. With a hugely heavy persimmon beast.

Nowadays it's something like:

9I - 110
8I - 125
7I - 140
6I - 150
5I - 160
4H - 170
3H - 180
2H -
4W - 200 off a tee
D - 190 OOB
D - 175 In the pond

New driver please...

First thing to do is have your lofts checked. Out of the box clubs can be off by a considerable margin. When i got my pings this year my friend checked them. The 50 degree gap wegde was actually 48.5 and my pw should be 45 was 46.

So not having the correct loft will give you duff readings

I know what you're saying but does it really matter as long as they're consistent? Obviously if the lofts are changing over time that's a different matter but if my 48 has been 47 all along but the gaps between that and my 52 and pw are OK surely it doesn't really matter? Altering one would mean possibly altering quite a few more?

I'm off 17 and have had mine done. But not had loft nd lies done in 12 months. All distances carry.

LW - 72
SW - 90
GW - 105
PW - 121
9 - 133
8 - 142
7 - 154
6 - 167
5 - 178
4 - 189
3 HYB - 205
3W - 228
D - 267

Helps a hell of a lot knowing your numbers, puts a lot more confidence in your decision. But still got to be some thought behind it all. Wind direction, lie uphill/downhill, fairway/rough, green uphill/downhill. No numbers can take any of that into account for you. But something definitely worth having done imo

Good distances but how many fairways are you hitting from your drives, greens in regulation from second shots, putts are you taking and how is your course management?

Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Have some lessons and get a lesson plan with your pro. It will pay dividends.

Hi

I am 24 handicapper and have been playing for about a year now. I am curious to see how far people hit their clubs and whether I should persue more distance in order to enter into the teens.

I currently hit the following distances.

Driver 220-230
7 wood 160-170
4 hybrid 150-160
7 iron 130-150
8 iron 120-130
9 iron 110-120
Pw 100-110
Gw 80-100
Sw 50-80

I actually believe that in order to lower my score i need to remove all silly shots and sharpen ahort game even further (its not too bad presently).

Thanks

Pretty much the same distances as me.

If your course is around average length (6200-6600 yards) I'd say you won't need to hit any further to play off 12 comfortably.

Rather than how far you hit it the numbers I'd focus on are
How many fairways do you hit?
How many times do you get up and down?

Distance with any particular club is pretty irrelevant apart from driver. It doesn't really matter if I take a 6 from 140 yds and my opponent hits a 9. However if you can squeeze an extra 10 or 20 from your driver to make the approach shorter that will help.

Completely agree, the club used to get a certain distance means nothing. It's accuracy that's most important. Not that someone hits their 8 iron as far as I hit my 5. Either way, if I'm accurate we got the same result from different clubs. Accuracy over distance for sure

Well yes. For eg, my pw flat out is 135 my gap wegde was 130 and my 54 wedge is 110. So thats a big gap of 20 yards because my lofts where incorrect. What club should i take for 120?

Love the flat out thing with golfers. Why give it all you've got and push it when this tends to bring in all the mistakes? Hit the ball within your ability.
Distance is knowledge, accuarcy is crucial, playing within yourself is skill.

Flat out is what i consider as hard as i can hit the ball whilst "thinking" I'm in control. I'd say flat out is 90% of what i can hit.

About the the same and I play off 18.

Have been known to thin a SW 150 yards though!
