I've not posted much on here but do read daily and you guys seem to know your stuff....

I've been playing since last August, bought some cheap (ish) clubs, had a few lessons and am enjoying my new hobby (obsession!!!)..

I have carded 1 sub 100 round (99) and usually hitting around the 100 mark. However i joined a club to start me off and decided to play in a charity comp next month, organisers say without offical handicap i would have to play off 18, thought no probs i will put a few cards in at my course and hopefully sort one in time for next month!!! My course is just a 9 hole so i needed to put 6 cards in, i did this, scores ranging from 46 - 54. (46&54 whilst doing 18.... typical still not under 100 ). I have since been told that to start i will be off 19!!!!! my actual handicap would prob be around 22 but due to previous new members and high handicapers i have been cut 3 and invited to put more cards in and this will be reviewed throughout the year....... comps or not!!! Not a problem, i understand possible issues with new members and high handicaps entering comps etc..... however, i have never actually played to this ..... i have parred a number of the holes but also hit 8's and 9's..... theres never one thing that gets me all the way round, i may slice drive on one but then 4 put on another !!!!

Anyway, back to my point....... how excactly is this handicap worked out?

On a positive note, i have hit my target for the year..... although not quite in the manner i would like ;)

Don't know how it works on 9 holers, so not sure if your 6 cards will be assessed as 6 9s or 3 pairs of 18 but handicaps are worked out on your best cards, and anything more than 2 over on any hole is only assessed as 2 over.

A rough guide will be to take your best gross score, knock off anything more than 2 over par on any hole (eg if you had an 9 on a par 4, it will only be assessed as 6 so knock off three). Then knock off the SSS for your course. What you're left with will be pretty close to what you get given

The acceptance of 9 hole cards is reasonably new previously only 18 hole cards counted, and also note that is not an average anymore it will be your best 2 modified 9's (as above with trebles and above made doubles) minus SSS so potentially if you had to 9 hole scoes of 46 although your best round is 99 you could be allocated a handicap based on a score of 92 before potential deductions
