How can I spot a mid handicapper?

In theory the handicap range is 0-28

Mid handicapper would be around 10-19. That's the middle third of the handicap range.

I think it's consistency. Mid handicapper can certainly play the game but will hit too many poor shots and have too many rounds where they're just not "on their game". But certainly capable of a nice swing and good ball striking.... sometimes!

This is a chap, to a tee (... No pun) at my place.

He hits the ball an absolute mile off the tee with his woods, but inside 100 yards and ouside of his "Power-Game" he's completley lost.

If you were, say sub 10, and stood behind him on the first tee box, knowing already you're giving him shots, no doubt you'd be dubious.

After the 1st hole though, you'd, probably be OK :D

I'm the other way. I'm a pretty poor driver of the ball (... Yes I'm addressing the issue) but my iron play and short game are pretty sound.

If you wanted to 'look' out for a mid handicapper I wouldn't look at their swing. I'd look more to their temprement and course managment.

Except the difference in ability between each handicap number becomes more pronounced as you get lower. IMO, there's a (much) bigger difference between someone off scratch and me than between me and a 14, but just the same numerical value.

In that case we need more categories.... You cant lump a 9 capper in with a 1 or scratch. Theres a massive difference...

That's why I said in theory.

Its all relative really. It depends what you mean by inconsistent etc. If that's means hitting one bad shot then everything above 1 is mid :)

I think Gareth makes a good point above about the temperament & course management too. You can tell a gun slinger when its starts going wrong they just melt, done it enough times thinking to myself don't blow it :D

For me I would say 9-15 is mid handicap. They can play some good stuff but throw in some tripe. 8 and less will mostly be playing close to their handicap/buffer most of the time I reckon.

Totally agree

This is harder to sum up than I thought

Nothing wrong with using the Congu Categories, albeit both ends of the middle pair.

Cat 1 - Very Low
Cat 2 - Low-Mid
Cat 3 - Mid-High
Cat 4 - High.

So 9 or 10 to 15 or 16 would be Mid.

I think there are various levels within the low/mid/high bandings. 6 'capper will still be hitting plenty bad shots, just not as many as those off 14.

I would agree with you Kaz, 6 to maybe 13 mid then above that high. along the lines of the current cats.

I would def not class myself as low and i'm sure my old mate Sam would agree;)

As a recent mover into the mid/high handicap zone from the high (no real idea how) I'd say a little bit of increase in consitency but the main area is how I handle a bad shot. Before I would have tried to smack the ball towards the green all the time. Now I'm happier to take my medicine and try to scramble a par or bogey. As far as swing goes there is actually little difference between now and what I was doing at the start of the year off 22.

I would not agree with the 6 being a mid handicapper, not because I am one. I think 9 to 15 as low to mid, in that at 9 you have just got to singles and 15 your getting further away from strokes per hole. As for there being a world of difference between a scratch player and a 5 handicap, well I would disagree with that as well. It really is dependant on the person, I have played against guys lower than me by a fair few strokes off scratch in the past ( 15+ years ago) and handed them their butts on a plate. The reason being is I was a par machine, I just turned it on and ground them out, I rarely birdied, but I only lost holes to birdie... Do that to people and you will see how solid they are. At this moment in time I don't know where I stand, I am still finding my feet as it were, I do birdie more than I used to but I am a little wayward off the tee with a driver, so I am giving away some pars. If I get that sorted and some short game feel I may be better than I was.

how can you spot one ? you cant really unless you play a few rounds with them .. Gareth touched on it in his posts you could gave 2 13 handicappers , one could out drive the other by 30 yards mid irons could be the equal enough and the guy short off the tee could be alot better around & on the greens

If you seen me drive and where my drives were ending up currently you would think i was off about 3 ,
see me play from 100-50 yards in you would think i was off bout maybe 15 ..
there is no way of spotting him /her

Currently working with one of the best ball strikers I've ever met... his h/cap is now 15 down from 20 just a month ago. He has the potential to be a lot lower based on his ball striking.... but he's nowhere near just yet.
