Any horror fans? I grew up watching the old Boris Karloff stuff, maybe some Vincent Price too.

A lot of the hammer stuff as well, I guess it would all look a bit tame compared to today's offerings

Although I can't think of anything of late that's caught my eye in the horror genre.

Oh Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

I laughed until I stopped

Big difference between horror and gore

Proper horror is full of suspense like The Woman in Black (even better live)

But most new offerings are just a gorefest, which any idiot can produce given enough imitation blood

I am however going to rename this thread "Horror Films" as to just call it "Boris" as it stands now, would have members thinking it was a political thread and we cant be having that can we

You're worrying about the wrong things, it will be the incredibly poor user experience from a mobile perspective at least, that puts people off the forum and ultimately drives others away.

I like some of Boris old stuff, much better than the recent horror shows;)

Took me back 35odd years, watching old horror films on a tiny black & white telly I had on my desk whilst studying.

I would agree in the difference between horror and gore. The latter seem to forego the plot line just to get into the blood fest.
I like some of the horror where it is based on suspense and anticipation rather than just waiting for next person to be bloodily mutulated.

The thing I hate most about the majority of modern horror films is the reliance on the jump-scare.

Proper tension and dread are much more effective than just shouting in someone's ear. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a lot less gory than most people think, and has very few jump scares, but the tension is ramped so high it's a brilliant horror.

CGI did massive damage to the horror genre. It used to be that you did not see the creature until the very end but now it can be shown in CGI glory it is on screen from the first minute. Add to that the fact that gore and jump scares have replaced solid tension build up and genuine fear and the genre has gone down hill. Think how lucky Spielberg was that the mechanical shark would not work in Jaws. A film made by the fact that they had to work without the shark that would have been ruined by having a rubber special effect in every shot.

There is still a place for decent animatronics, the best films use a good mix of both.

Fair point, The Thing is still up there with my favourite films. I use jaws as an example because the failure of the technology made it the film it is and it is at its worst when the rubber shark is used.

See 'Gocko' Flash Gordon (1936) Episode 2...3mins in. Splendid...scary...come on Flash!

And no lusting after Jean Rodgers as Dale Arden allowed (apparently young lads got very hot under the collar with this lass back then - apparently her attire became a little skimpy for the times)

Can't stand horror films, my least favourite genre. Watching something that tries to make me jump for two hours is not my idea of entertainment. It's just irritating. I like comedies for example, because laughter is a desirable feeling, whereas something that makes me tense and/or nervous is not.

I used to love Flash Gordon, they would show it on tv in the school holidays when I was a kid. Ming really was merciless

That, Champion the Wonder Horse and other greats from back then :D. Happy days.

same here, wife likes them but find it a bit boring TBH, Zombies and Vampires are OK

Didn't mind the genre when younger but generally it bores me these days, rarely flick through the horror section on netflix - will normally either fall asleep or revert to phone or make a cup of tea, often just rubbish. Had to sit through the remake if IT recently - seen it all before yawn. I don't get scared with horror films which defeats the purpose.
Exceptions might be the Final Destination series for the sheer inventiveness of ways to die horribly, Cabin in the Woods - the big twist at the end was good. 28 days later and sequel were watchable. Jaws is obviously a good film. The comedy parody ones like Scream 20 years ago were ok too.

Absolutely love a good horror film but as has already been pointed out on here, there are so many that rely on cheap jump scares or excessive gore.

In terms of modern horrors I found “It Follows” to be a pretty good film with some truly scary moments. Hereditary left me feeling very uneasy for a while as well.
