Hole in one?

I would buy a few bottles of spirit if I was ever lucky enough to get a hole in one.
The reason behind the tradition seems simple. Who would lie about getting one if it was going to cost a round of drinks opposed to receiving them.

I'm not a member of a club so always play as a visitor. So on the very very off chance I'd ever get a hole in 1 I happily buy my playing partners a pint. But no way would I by drinks for a bunch of strangers I'd never met or am likely to meet again. In the same way I'd not accept a drink from a stranger I've never met in a club house.

I've got to admit I'm in the "Why have to pay out for a HIO" camp. I've only seen one HIO let alone got one and the guy completely fluked it as he thinned his tee shot towards the green and it hopped it was into the hole. Fortunately it was a Tueday evening roll up and there were only about 8 people there but he still got punished for his good fortune which I think is totally unfair. When I used to play pool at club level we had an unwritten rule that if you dished someone off the break they bought you a drink not the other way around.
Outdated and rediculous, it's time for a change!

When I got mine (which was a dog of a shot, thinned/scuffed one up the hill and must have rolled it a good 70 yards!) was in a men's match, so bought a round for 24 people, 12 of whom were the opposition who I'd never met before.

£75 and I don't even drink alcohol!

I didn't mind and none of them took the p*ss and ordered doubles or anything.

Should I get one in a comp with 80-100 people in it, then I've go insurance for £200 (as long as it's a recognised club comp) so will just put that behind the bar and when it runs out, it runs out. But there'll be strict instructions to the bar staff to not allow doubles or large glasses of wine, etc. If I didn't have insurance, I'd simply tell people that I couldn't afford it.

Don't think I've ever seen someone drink whiskey at my place, so one or two bottles on the bar won't work at all.

Oh, and a hole in one doesn't take the 2's pot at Westerham either!
