It’s not a hole in one 🤷‍♂️

From that picture there isn’t anything below the putting surface

Rule 13.2c of the USGA Rules and Interpretations addresses this part of the game and the full rule can be seen below:

If your ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole, and any part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, your ball is treated as holed.

What happens if the flag is moved? If it drops, it's in. If it doesn't, it's not. The ball only has to be a 1mm below the line but the only way to really know is to move the flag.

Ball is at rest so if you move the flag and the ball moves then it must be moved back to the spot where it was at rest or the nearest point where the ball isn’t moving

If it was resting against the flag having broken the plane of the hole then it’s holed

We can't see if it has broken the plane from that picture.

Can the ball fall in if it hasn't already broken the hole plane
i.e if no part of the ball is below the surface then it should stay on the edge when flagstick moved away

Oh and I don't think it really happened but pic has been staged for effect :sneaky:

Ave not commented on the post, yet. But if it possible to mark the ball( and it is) lift the ball. Remove the flag and ball drops in when replaced 😳 what happens. If the flag is moved away from the ball and the ball was resting against the flagpole and drops in, is it a hole in one.
That aside I would love to know what the actual ruling is. Because if I was looking at that. I would move the ball to see what would happen. Would there be penalty shots, or if in a comp loss of hole.
Also what would happen if a PP moved the flagpole and the ball dropped.

Bottom line the guy has asked if it is a hole in one and when I first looked the consensus was, it isn’t. 😳

I think it still can drop depending on the surface around the hole and angle of flag etc

Rule 13.2 I believe .
If the ball is not below the hole it isn't holed if it falls in when you remove pin you replace the ball without penalty and hole out.
👍

Just googled it.

Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole

If your ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole, and any part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, your ball is treated as holed.

If no part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green:

  • Your ball is not holed and must be played as it lies
  • the flagstick is removed and your ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty and it must be replaced on the lip of the hole.

It transpires that he didn’t know if it was a hole in one as he has not been playing that long so was unsure of the rules. I have aske pd him what did he do from that point re move flag, see if ball is below surface etc.
