I dont see much difference, both of these shots are caused by the same problem, the leading edge hitting high on the ball and from my perspective both stem from the same problem.

And I disagree with you. I have explained how I came to my opinion, please can you verify why you disagree please?

As you quite rightly say..
A thin is normally caused but someone either standing up or leaning back, hitting the ball at its equator sending the ball on a low flight.
However...
A top is caused by someone getting too far forward during the downswing which makes the swing too steep and would often cause the club to hit the top part of the ball. This drives the ball down into the ground and it bouces along the ground.
