Possibly looking to change my irons in search of a little more forgiveness and managed to trial a few today.
Took a Cally RazrX Tour 6 iron on the course today and it went well, no dramas just very solid, including a 190 yard downwind shot on the last that set up a par after hacking oit of the rough.
After the round I had more spare time so took off to the Range I got the 910 driver from. They sorted me out Mp53, AP2, RazrX Tour, FGTour and SnakeEyes 685x 6 irons to play with.
No monitor, just my eye. Hit my MP58 6 iron as a control and then got into it.
Dismissed FG Tour fairly quickly, just didn't look or feel right. I really wanted to like the AP2 but that followed soon after - again it just didn't grab me and appeared a little.shorter but that may just have been the loft.
Unfortunately, the Snake Eyes followed the others out of the door. Lovely iron, beautiful to look at and hit but too similar to my clubs forgiveness wise.
So it came.down to a straight fight between the MP53 and the RazrX Tour.
Looks-wise it's no contest. Performance-wise there's nothing in it. Both long, straight and forgiving. Price-wise there's no contest. The Razr is £100 quid cheaper!!
So, assuming I do change, it's down to whether I can afford the Mizzys or whether I can cope with the looks of the Razr - I think I probably can.
So a bit of thinking to.do.
I was a little surprised that, performance-wise, there was virtually nothing to choose between all these clubs. Distance was similar, except the AP2 which does have a weaker loft, consistency was - well, consistent, ball flight similar and the feel too despite the Razr being cast.

Which way do I go??

Desicions, desicions.....

or maybe the Callys if £100 is the be all to the decision.

I'd thought I'd sit on the fence. ;)

It matters not one jot....

Because whatever you get you will be in the same position 12 months down the line.

You got custom fitted for some I15's, they lasted 3 weeks
You have had your Mizzy'a about a year

Its not the clubs, its the club user that needs to become more consistant

You boast about only having had one lesson in your life.
well maybe its time to reconsider.

Mizuno - MP58s -gosh you've already got some!!

If you like the Callys but found them a bit ugly would it be worth looking at the Razr forged rather than the tour?

Did think about that Steve but looking at them I wasn't overly confident about the amount of forgiveness. If I was swinging well then they'd be fine but....

And to be fair I didn't find the RaxrX Tour too bad to look at.

Says the Jackass that bought thr R11 and ditched that, went for a chipping lesson and was asked by playing partners whether he had actually gone and can't put headcovers on the correct club.

It's not a boast that I've only had one lesson, it's a fact. I don't have the time or patience to practice changes a Pro would make.
My iron play is generally one of the strong.parts of my game. The MP58's are Tour quality clubs and although I do hit them well, there are times when a bit more forgiveness will hopefully help my scores. The 58's are just a bit too "good" for me on a normal day. The 53's or Razr's may suit me better on those days when the swing isn't working. A dead-centre strike wont feel much different.
Ever thought why you play G15's instead of S56's..?

Because your swing ain't good enough Oh Floppy Shafted One...
Mine's not quite good enough for the 58's..

Savvy...?????????

A mate of mine has the razr forged and they are lovely. Not sold on the lesser version.

I'm far from convinced that more forgiving irons make that much difference.

Hmm. I'm trying to wean myself back onto my Mizunos from my X-18s. It's not going well. I took the 6/8/PW of each set to the range and, well, um, ... they are not even close in terms of straightness and consistent strike.

I love my X-18's so easy to hit, just have to remember not to get too fast with them.

Keep looking at new irons and will prob buy MP53's but I know deep down that I should stick with what I have.

Cheers

Steve...

I've still got my macgregor blades, my titleist. Combos, and my Adams cavities. I hit them all pretty much the same. Wondering why several thousand pounds later I didn't stick with my Clevelands?

I cant vouch for any of the others but I'm on my second AP2 set and I love them. I had regular shafts and I was hitting them too high but switching to stiffs seems to have helped.

just bought a set of MP53s and to qoute a phrase i would say they were the mutts nuts first time out in medal round and took 0.6 from my handicap in the wind i was well chuffed couldnt fault them at all.
