It is my understanding that a CDH is a lifetime number. Anyone know how to find mine if I am no longer a golf club member.

You could try one of the email addresses on this page. https://www.englandgolf.org/contact-us

Don't forget to tell them you are not a member of a club. I'd suggest giving as much information as possible, such as date of birth, last club, address when last a member, telephone number when last a member, email address when last a member. anything else you may think relevant.

I am actually doing this on behalf of my son who has taken up golf again after being a junior member of my golf club in the 1990’s. That club can’t find a record of his lifetime CDH number so I am trying to find it myself via whatever means available, hence my post

Have beenn through this recently myself and picked up some facts that may interest/apply here.

They can search by Name and other personal details but you will need to to speak to the correct person - someone from the CDH helpline. Just ask the receptionist who answers the phone to be put through to CDH queries/help!

They had two records for me; Old one under my full name and a later one under my use name. The latter one was brought forward when the computer system was updated to prepare for WHS as it was last active (membership) in 2018; but the previous one (2016) was not. That suggests a cut-off date c.2017 so if your son wasn't a member then, there won't be any info available.

I thought it was interesting at the time and the two records only came into the discussion when I said I'd like to have them consolidated if possible. Was told that was impossible due to the playing record not being brought forward for the 2016 record.

Presumably, a new CHD will be required.

Thanks for that. I’m probably wasting my time then. Based on your experience, it isn’t a lifetime number then!

It should be a lifetime number but I suspect a need to prepare for WHS required a decision on "historical" records being brought into the new database when the player may have stopped permanently/passed away/found another pastime.

They had all past records to go on so a 3/4 year time limit on inactive numbers may have been a reasonable choice. We'll never know!

One thing that did happen pre WHS was that clubs were asked to 'purge' their records.
Although not directly involved in the process I think this meant removing any members that had left the club, died etc.

Somebody involved with the process might be able to give more detail.

Ideally, it should be a lifetime number. All old records were migrated to the new WHS database. Unfortunately the old CDH database did not hold much in the way of personal information (no email addresses, dates of birth, etc.), and housekeeping was an afterthought, so identifying old/unknown/forgotten numbers can sometimes prove impossible. In such cases, a new number gets issued, and as a result, there are thousands of abandoned/duplicate accounts in the database.

My (unreliable) recollection is that they only transferred to CONGU records with an active handicap. Players who left clubs before about 2018(?) were not transferred.

From memory CDH numbers didnt come until around 2010, so if he was not a member then he will have never had a CDH.

I just found this:

The Central Database of Handicaps (CDH) was introduced in 2009 to assist Golf Clubs in the administration of their member’s handicaps and in particular in the transfer of qualifying scores back to the player’s home golf club.

The CDH has in excess of 1800 golf clubs and approx 750,000 men and women registered on the system.

One of the key principles in the operation of the system is that each home club member, with a CONGU handicap, is assigned a CDH ID number. This number will allow other clubs to confirm the individual’s membership of a golf club as well as their exact playing handicap. This is particularly useful in terms of entry into Open competitions and the increasing number of clubs operating online entries.

A wee bit off topic but aside from whether its for lifetime. Is the Central Database of Handicaps worldwide? (the numbers of clubs/players above) would suggest not, which seems strange for a WHS

If not, I'd guess there must be some international transfer protocol in place then?

CDH was simply the CONGU (GB&I) handicap database under the old system.
The term "CDH number" is technically no more, but it clings on because it's the terminology golfers are familiar with and the numbers themselves didn't change and were directly ported to WHS (and rebranded, e.g. as the England Golf membership number).

There is no transfer of these numbers - each jurisdiction has their own member id system. Handicap records themselves have to be manually recreated/duplicated if moving between unconnected jurisdictions.
