Hillside Blackball Gerrard

Where does it rate amongst all those wonderful links courses up there ? Certainly seems to have a dress code stricter than most - is the course worthy of that ?

Can't see it in the Top 100 list?

Nowhere close to them.

Nice flattish parkland course, manicured within an inch of it's life and good to play in winter.

However, I'd built it up to be a fantastic course in anticipation, but rather let down once I played it. Delamere, Preston, Fairhaven, Pleasington, Manchester are better courses IMO.

Its an odd one Phil that's for sure. Very prestigious club by all accounts and to be fair a lovely Clubhouse and a nice enjoyable course that's usually in fantastic condition but in my opinion there are much better courses out on the coast and also better inland courses in lancs.
I'm lead to believe though that Ormskirk is the Swinley Forest of lancs 😄

Its a really nice course. 6inchcup can advise better than I, but it's quite a lengthy process to become a member, and at one time it was a quite exclusive and a bit of a closed shop. That said, it's always a really friendly club to visit.

The course is not in the same league as the big boys out on the coast, but it's certainly very high up there in regards to clubs in Lancashire.

So a 2/3 waiting list for a course that isn't justified by the supposed standing ? Is it more about the "social standing" ?

Why such a standing when it appears to not even be anywhere near a top ten course in its county ?

I need to get round and play Ormskirk.

Anyone know the history behind it being an "exclusive" club?

Isn't Delamere along the same lines?

Delamere, as I understand it, deliberately maintain a small membership. You can apply, but you need a proposer and seconder, and over a period of time, you have to play with as many members of the committee as possible and have at least 2 write a letter recommendation. I believe it pretty much takes a year to get in, but, it's not a closed shop, and you really have to make an effort to integrate. There is also a lot of social golf and not many competitions. Again, a really friendly club to visit and imo, Sandiway and Delamere are the two best inland courses in the NW.

Definitely do at least one this year, really fancy Sandiway

Definately. Once we get out of the minus temperatures and the lakes have disappeared from the greens I was thinking of trying to get a few tee times at Sandiway one evening.

I'd be interested to see the demographic ......I might be wrong but it could be an aged membership and a course that will have too, in time, review its joining fees etc.

Yeah sounds like one that at some stage will have to adjust the way it works or it will disappear

I've just had a look on the top 20 in Lancashire and this was a the results, Pleasington 9th, Ormskirk 10th, Manchester 12th Royal Fleetwood 16th and Preston 20th.

Surprised to say the least.

I need to play Sandiway again as it must have been at least 10 years since i last played there. I now only live about 10miles down the road from it so must get into gear

Formby still above Hillside aswell.....

Preston is a far better course than Fleetwood and Formby Hall IMO. Makes you realise how lucky we are in the NW looking at that list really

Some goat track at number 7 though
