Now i've been playing golf for the best part of 25 years, and married for 15 of them. HID has never been interested in golf at all..........that was until my little un (11 year old daughter) joined the junior section of my club this year. The misses started taking her to the range and practice sessions and somehow picked up the dreded golf bug. In the autumn this year I bought her one of these all in packages (bag, clubs, balls, tees all for £180) and she started playing. Now even if I say so myself, she has a pretty good swing, and I sent her off for lessons with the pro who also says she has a good swing. She seems to have got it bad, even yesterday when it was blowing a hooly and freezing cold she draged me off to the practice ground. she now wants her name down on the waiting list for membership at my club....it's all getting very scary for me. The reason being is that golf was my domain, something I did for myself, my space..but now it looks as if I have to share it.

Am I being unreasonble, or selfish? How many others on here have to take HID to the golf club?

I took my wife to the range once and thanked my lucky stars that she couldn't even get the ball out of the bay. She has no interest at all.

I think you are being perfectly reasonable. Gold if my escape from everything. Don't get me wrong. I love my wife and Kid, I'd also go as far as to say I enjoy my job. But I f**king love golf and love the escape it gives me from everything else thats going on!

My better half wanted to learn and had a series of lessons through the Sports and Social at work. She got a 1/2 set bag shoes etc and had friend who was a member of Ascot who encouraged her and took her out. We all went to the Ashbury in Devon for a weeks golfing holiday to get HID into it and use to playing proper courses regularly. Not sure if it was a cunning plan to stop playing but on the 1st evening she slipped playing ten pin bowling and snapped a tendon and broke her wrist.

She has never played since!! She is more than encouraging to me though and is pretty good about my impulse buying so all in all I can't complain.

twiregolf, just make sure you hook her up with the ladies section of your club & I doubt you'll actually see much of her on the course or need to play matches with her unless you choose to or its a mixed stableford of something like that.

Once shees socialising with the ladies section of your club I doubt she'd probably need to say more than a couple of sentences to you in a complete visit to the club. I've seem many Husband & Wife golfing families co-exist in golfwith no detriment to either. I shouldn't worry.

I have just joined my first club as a playing member and the wife as a social, the ladies there who we have chatted to have already offered to take her for a round and give her some advice, so this spring I shall book her some lessons and get her a half set.

HID has always said its my thing golf, but I don't mind, I would love to be able to play a round, meet the wife after a round and stay in the bar for a few with her, not forgetting golfing holidays which at the moment I have to twist her arm in letting me take my clubs abroad, I am sure she things I dont intend to play just take them to make sure they dont get nicked whilst we are away!!!

Yes golfing holidays... My other half doesn't play that well, but she enjoyes the game. She doesn't have the time or the transport to make joining a club worth while, but she playes well enough & generally quickly enough not to be needing to allow every Tom Dick & Henrietta through lol.

If my other half didn't golf I don't think I'd get half the trips away, the only problem being it costs me twice as much as If I'd have gone on my own or with mates, but of course If I take the missus then she has no cause to complain so probably enjoy the experience of a golfing holiday much more, the extra cost barely registers.

For instance I doubt I'd convince my workmates I golf with to arrange a golf trip to scotland by car. But I could with the missus. And almost at the drop of the hat. Only limitation is her lack of handicap, meaning some couses are OOB for any trip of that sort.

My HID has absolutely no interest in Golf. I reckon she'd be quite good as she's quite strong but it's my domain for now.

Thats not a problem, it's ladies day on Tuesdays, and the men play on Saturday.

There are a few mixed comps through the year.

It's more like the Friday evenings in the summer when I used to go up for 9 holes etc to unwind from work........looks like I won't be on my own now.

It also opens up the realms of golfing holidays in exotic locations. Don't knock it mate.

That is defo a good point, but at the momment eldest daughter doesn't play only youngest. So golfing holidays are out of the question until we can leave them on there own.

Sam (my Missus) used to play golf many years ago with her Grandad...doen't know how good she was, she won't show me her swing!
She knows I love the game, and she gets a lot of satisfaction just walking the course with me (she loves walking).
I have said I would get her a set of clubs but she doesn't want me to.
I am playing on the Sunday after Christmas with a group of lads...she has asked if I mind if she comes and walks the course with me. I don't mind it it's with my usual 3 mates but I understand on this particular day there is going to be quite a few blokes I don't know playing and I don't want to appear "under the thumb" by having the wife with me.
So she is going shopping!

My girlfriend as been playing for 2 years now and really enjoys it,she prefers to go round with me and i love it i losing interest in playing competive medal golf the only reason i do it is to get my handicap cut,we get up Scotland 8-10 times a year granted mainly playing a campsite course Hoddom Castle and a round on Lockerbie but do go further a field once a year,
If it gets you out playing as a family even if its just 9 holes its got to be a good thing

I must say though........it's made buying xmas presents for her this year very easy. New driver (TM Burner), Pencil stand bag (we do have to carry sometimes on our course) and a 9 hole playing lesson.

I know, I know I spoil her rotten but she is worth it.

twiregolf you are not unreasonable, your own space is as important to your relationship as anything else is. You may find it a blessing in disguise but you may also find it a bind, who knows?

I myself would love having my missus play, home ed and the kids hold that up but she will join me sometime and I look forward to it as shes a real beauty .

Don't know what to say.

If my HID took up golf, I expect you'd find me on crimewatch wanted for murder with a blunt 3 iron.

Seriously, find time for yourself and time for HID. I think that might mean double golf!!!!

Don't worry about it, if your wife take it up seriously, she will end up with a group of friends like you have at the club. She'll play in the ladies comps and you'll continue to play in the gents. The upside is you can occassionally play in mixed opens on good courses for a fraction of the normal greenfee. It's a good day out for some pleasant golf with the wife.

Downside is if she wins more than you in a year you never here the end of it!
