After reading Bobs "4 wedgers" post a few days back I got to thinking.

What's more important? Length at the top end of the bag keeping distances close together, or accuracy at the short end of the bag, again keeping distances close?

Does handicap play a factor, or is it a personal preference?

To me, I would have thought it would be at the scoring end of the bag, but I'm just curious to see peoples opinions..

You can't keep distances close with all your wedges otherwise from 100 yards and in you will need 10 wedges.

Distances fairly close on the longer stuff as its easier to ease off a wedge than it is off a 3 wood.

I am fairly new to the game and it was suggested to me that having 4 wedges was a good plan. I am beginning to wonder.

I rarely use the lob wedge and have noticed that since I have been getting more distance with my driver during the dry weather my 2nd shot into the green is often between clubs. I have a 2 hybrid which I am overhitting the greens with and my next club is a 4 iron which is often not enough.

I am thinking maybe to ditch the lob wedge in favour of a 3 hybrid or 3 iron to solve the problem.

Me and you are going to get on just fine :D

I used to have 4 wedges, pw 46 deg, gap 52 deg, sand 56 deg and lob 60 deg

I now carry pw 46 deg, gap/sand 54 deg & lob/ sand 60 deg

dont miss the other one and I can add/de loft on my current ones although I am still not of an ability to do normal shots consistantly let alone messing around delofting them and so forth lol.

I done it to add a hybrid also although I am thinking of dropping my 4 iron and going with

driver, 3 & 5 wood, 17 deg 2 hybrid, 22 deg 4 hybrid, 5-pw, 54 & 60 and putter = 14 clubs :)

that may change though :)

Tried the 4 wedge set up again and it didn't really work for me. I like the question and to me accuracy is more important than length every time. I know Timmy will argue that he'd rather be hitting 8 iron instead of my 6 but I'd rather start on the tee and get the ball 240 and in play rather than 300 in the rough. From there I'd look at my options. On a very long par 4 the chances are I'll try and lay up to within 80-100 and use my PW or 52 and try and get it close for a 1 putt. I put a fair bit of effort into these shots and so would be pretty confident. Chances are it would be a shot hole too so 5 nett 4 is never going to hurt. On mid par 4's or par 5's I'd be going for the green with a mid iron on the 4's and probably laying up to my favourite distance on the 5's. It is sometimes harder to pull a 6 iron on a par 5 and stick with the game plan than giving in to temptation and pulling a 5 wood or long iron and going for glory
