John, please dont panic.
There's probably a simple reason for the slice and will be very fixable so no need to give up golf.
Do you have a video of your swing? If you have or can get one can you post it on here through youtube. There's lots of people on here who will be able to help including Neil Plimmer :)

This can very often be the case, but can also be other things causing it.

Is it definately a slice? ie: starts left of the target then bends off to the right or does it actually start right of the target and go further right?

...and what is your normal shape of shot?

regards...

Or does it start straight and then curve right?

My tendency was always to slice, partly because I sometimes stood too close to the ball and came from outside-in to make contact, sometimes because I leant back and swung through with my hands and released too late, (which still happens with the driver if I try to knock the skin off the ball!), sometimes because I started with too weak a grip and had the face open as I hit the ball.

Best thing is to get your swing on video, get the slice on video especially, so the experts here can point out exacty where you're going wrong.

Don't worry though, my natural slice has turned into more of a draw these days, especially with my irons, (though sometimes mahoosive hooks, and still occasional slices with the driver.)

As bob states above, slices can be fixed. When I started playing a year ago I was slicing all over the place, especially with driver. My bad shot is now a snap hook, but there is a fix for that too!

My advice would be to get a lesson with a PGA pro as soon as possible. A pro will be able to identify the problem quickly and will advice on how you can cure it. It's not going to be easy, but persevere and the results will come.

sorry i cant post a vid of my swing because when it comes to computers im a bit stooopid. when i say slice i think its more of a shank plus a bit of topping at the same time and its not at all pretty. i had a lesson today and the pro said i was about 4 inches too far away from the ball and my knee flex was way to much and my head wasnt behind the ball enough but now my swing is so alien to me.

Well in that case you might be getting too far AHEAD of the ball. Either way it sounds like you have a slight weight shift problem.

Practice shots with your feet together. It will stop excessive weight transfer in either direction. Then gradually widen your stance over 15 shots... and repeat :)

It should get you more accustomed to what your weight shift is doing. It's very common to swing too hard and either get too ahead of the ball (presenting a shank) or falling back (presenting a slice).

Hope this helps.

It will! Best to get it right though. Posture is very important, as is balance and ball position. It will come with time.

What's your handicap and how long have you been playing?

As far as you are comfortable with...

It's a practice drill to get you used to your balance and weight shift... to get you to know your own swing better. Just don't fall over :D I'd advise starting with 1/2 swings...hehe.

You can also try putting your right foot directly behind your left, place your right toe about 3 inches back from your left heel and do the same... it's dead tricky but will stop you moving around. Don't worry about where the ball goes... it's practice! Just hitting it will be good! :)

If you are standing too far away from the ball then it's easy to leave the clubface wide open so definately go on the advice of what the pro told you... after all he's the one who's actually SEEN your swing (and set up) :)
