hi there, i have just taken up golf and i have had 3 lessons.
I was just wondering how many of you started off useless and are now pretty good?
Its one of the hardest things i have tried to do , but it will not beat me .
I would like to join a club so i can get a handicap , i don't think i'am good enough yet ? any advice? cheers benny

Hi benny, firstly welcome to the forum. I took golf up last year at the young age of 39. Being half decent at other sports (semi-pro football my best achievement) I really thought I would pick the game up easily.... wrong!!

I can knock it around a lot better now but still have the horror holes that wreck my card in competitions (I just cannot buy a handicap cut)

Golf - the most relaxing yet infuriating hobby/sport ever invented ;)

Welcome mate. You are starting right with lessons. Guess most of us are useless at the start and then just get worse. It will drive you mad.:fore:

Welcome mate.

Read that and saw myself.

It does get better which leads to a bigger addiction.

Just bear in mind it will get better and better then you will play worse than ever before! Stick with it though and set smaller goals for now. Join a club maybe next year and play pay n plays to try different courses.

Before you worry about handicaps, lessons, correct kit, what to wear.

Just get out on the course and enjoy it. Enjoy the pure pleasure of golf before getting into all the minutiae on here.

Yes, went round a local course in 140 plus years ago, hit a 90 6 months later. I'm now off 9.

The journey is the best part.

hello and thanks for all the reply's.
homer i think i'am a younger version of yourself.
just been practising down the range and i have turned up at Dalston gc a few times but i've got a lot to learn.
my lessons are really helping.

aye - i was useless and now am slightly better than useless
was just reminiscing about my first ladies open in 2009 where i hacked my way round the course, two years later and i got a third place in an open and a lovely M&S voucher for £45!
practice makes perfect!
welcome :D

its nice to know i'am not the only one.
everyone you see playing is pretty good but i suppose they had to start some where. thanks for the warm welcome.

some people were just born single figure handicappers
the majority of us are normal and have happily hacked a golf course to bits ;)
once you get the bug there will be no stopping u!

OOO and I've played Dalston - its the wee 9 hole attached to the caravan site isnt it? the 3rd hole is lovely! very tricky. i think the captains pot got a lot of money from me the weekend i played it ;)

Welcome to the forum dibenny! You're spot on about everyone having to start somewhere. My first visit to a driving range was spent trying to actually hit the ball. Lots of misses but when I actually managed to get the club to hit the ball I was addicted. A cruel game at times, but the good moments make it one of the best. Good luck with the lessons

Welcome. I started off useless then got less and less useless but now I'm better than useless but not as good as Rory.We all finish up somewhere in between well most of us do.

My first time on the Driving range all i wanted to do was hit my driver , now i have had a few lessons i realise i was trying to run before i could walk.
just me and the 7 iron all the way now:)

Hi dibenny, just dig in and keep at it as one day ull be smashing every ball like uve been playing for years and the next day ull play as if uve never seen or held a club before! Its the good days that keep u coming back for more! That and getting out of doing the shopping! ;-)

hi, I am fairly new to the game and started with lessons if you fancy a round any time would love to play with a fellow novice - I am definitely improving with practice and some of the tips on in are effective too.

hello welcome and enjoy whatever level you are atyou can always aspire to be better. good way to start getting lessons early on, the more you play and practice the better you will become but above all else Enjoy!
