Have you created a "distance table" ? how? do you use it ?

I disagree, range balls fly the same as normal balls up to about 140/150 yards. Its only with the longer clubs they don't fly as far. I set all my yardages on the range and they held true on the course.

That's not my experience. Earlier in the week I hit 50 balls at the range with a 6 iron and they all came up shy of the 135 marker. I went and played a few holes after and the 6 iron was going 150 yards.

With my previous set of irons, I hit about a dozen new pro V1s on a flat part of the course (in the rough of course!) on a calm day, concentrating on a smooth swing, then lazered back to my bag. I wrote them down on a sticky label and put that on the side of my range finder. As has been said, measure carry (not roll). Also with wedges practice 3 swing lengths and gripping down. Hence with 3 wedges you will have 3x3x2=18 distances. Some will be very similar and then you chose which one you are most comfortable with. This is how Pelz says to do things.
I changed clubs last summer and have to do this all again as my wedge play stinks!

No i just remember them in my head, have a rough idea of the distances in my head but will proabably do something more in depth this year, i have seen players carry a little notebook in there bags with distances on.

I have a small notebook with distances noted down, will update it shortly for warmer weather conditions.

I guess it differs from range to range then as I have been told the same at the 3 ranges I frequent.

Sorry, I have to question this . I have 3 ranges near me and each one has totally different types of balls. The best one has a ball that feels almost like a real ball and they fly pretty well but at least 10 yards short of a real ball even with a wedge. The other 2 ranges have balls of varying states of crapiness and they not only go nowhere near the distance, they also vary right through the bucket.

I take a 6 Iron out in the practise area and hit 10 balls then use my Skycaddie mark ball function to get a distance, then deduct or add 10 yds per club up to PW and down to 3 iron. Usually the practise area is not well manicured so what you measure is generally the carry. I also do this with my wedges for half shots

PW => 75yds
52' => 65 yds
etc

All the information I keep in my head, I have never been a good judge of distance so with this info and my Skycaddie. I am never to far away on distance "if" I get the right swing right!

I'm blessed with the ranges I use I guess :D

I suggest asking the pro who works there his opinion, I have been told this by two pros who work at ranges.

all very well but what do you do when the wind is behind you, your 160yards out but have to play over a hill to a blind green which is down the other side. this throws these books out the window.
Well most of the time its quite flat, and without wind.
I try to set up a table for these conditions.

then you have to adjust with elevation and wind. One you know that with moderate wind against the shot you play a 6 iron instead of a 7, well you know it or you can improve your table with some more information.

There must be a software or an iPhone App for this.

I hit 150m with 7 iron, and I think I have 10 to 15 meters between clubs for long clubs... I have to spend some time metering the whole bag... thank you all for your replies

Thank you for your answer. this is what I should try.
May I ask you what distances you got as a comparison ? I am more wondering about the intervals between clubs than your distances.
this again for your time.

I hit 10 balls with each club and took the average discounting the bad ones. Did that into and down wind (approx 10mph). It was relatively damp and the practice ground grass was longish so there wasn't any huge roll maybe +5 yards so the distances were pretty much carry. It seems to correlate to the course and so the 7 iron I measured at 142 on the range is flying 140-145 when I play.

My intervals are around 10 yards carry per club. You will also need to update your distances through the year as you get better (hopefully) and the weather improves (wishful thinking)

I seriously believ that this is one of the factors in bringing my handicap down 4 shots in 3 months. It is so great knowing you have the right club in your hand when you stand over a shot. Good luck

I find that one of the most construstive elements of using a GPS device (Skycaddie in my case) is that not only do I use it to select my club (and obviously I factor in slope, wind, etc etc etc etc....... :) ) but I get immediate feedback to include in my mental spreadsheet.

I have to say that when reading the distances everyone hits their mid irons it feels like an AA meeting to say 'I only hit my 7 iron 143 yards'..... :(, but then again there's normally a bigger club in the bag if needed.

Utter nonsense. Range balls are garbage for a wedge to your driver.

Why would they only impact longer clubs?

Yardages should be measured with the ball type you play most often. No point in believing you hit 260 yard drives with a lump of granite then you only just clear 200 with your Pro V1.

I'm honest with my yardages and 143 is what I hit and I consider myself to be a short hitter. I agree that should the need arise there are far longer clubs that can be used if conditions dictate and I'd avail myself of them

We are lucky in brussels to have several nice courses. Though some are private, most can be played during the week. Ravenstein is private all week, old course type, short with lots of trees.
my favorite is http://www.royalwaterloogolfclub.be/ with a very nice course : La Marache.
Antoher very nice and more open to non members: http://www.golf7fontaines.be/ and the best course is "Le Chateau"

there are others but I play mainly those 3.

both last (waterloo and 7fontaines) can be played easily during the week to my knowledge (I usually play with a local member but I think the only one that asks for a member to invite you is Ravenstein. I am not a member of those clubs as I like to change and have friends in each of them :-)

price is 50€ if i recall well.

I'll be happy to join depending of your planning. I'm 16 hdcp.
Don't hesitate to ask for more info.

I have a small piece of laminated card with my average distances for each club I keep it in my score card
holder so if Im not sure I always have a quike reference. Got my distances the old fashioned way on the school playing field, 10 balls with each club and paced out to the middle of the grouping giving me the avarage. Works for me. Read recently that Sandy Lyle actually tapes the distance for each club on the shaft his clubs ! interesting thought. PS whats a Sky Caddy :p

A sky caddy is an electronic device that one buys for an exorbitant amount of wonga and then get bored with it when you realize that there are 150 yard markers that tell you the distance to the green. so it lies in your golf bag gathering dust testimony to the fact that direction is the problem and not distance.

the winds today blow these distance tables out the window! we are going to assess the situation after the arsenal game and see if its worth heading out for a few holes.
