 Ball retrievers should be banned

While I am somewhat determined not to take this post seriously.... They really should be banned!!

What about that guy who lost his house cos he had been taking balls out of lakes and ponds on golf courses, is this not just the same thing on a smaller scale. I thought lost balls belonged to the golf club!!

I think clubs could do a lot more to help the slow play problem, clearly many players don't know the correct etiquette .

When players pick up there cards before commencing a round if the pro our whoever tells them the importance of letting players through where possible then gradually it might help.

100% spot on but people will just ignore the advice thinking this does not apply to them!

I have an issue with teh same group of 4 every saturday morning at my place, its a roll up and some how they manage to get out before me (even tried getting out before 7.30 am). I know they are slow which i dont mind and even let them get a 2 hole head start on me.

However I soon catch them up and even standing on the tee with them, not once have they asked me to play in front. In fact i have had to ask direct or even skip a couple of holes just to get past them (whic i find a bit awkward)

have reported them many times to the pro and had a little chat in the bar but they just think its not a problem and switch off :(

As you know I am not a good golfer but i do get miffe doff taking 20 mins plus to play a hole and I am solo too!

Forgive me if I've missed something, but are you playing by yourself on a Saturday morning roll up?

Re the OP, with apologies if this has been mentioned already, but I'm at work so scan-reading, I wonder if we couldn't go down the route of Holland, and make people take a course before taking to the course. It's like a licence to golf, and all members have to pass a test on etiquette and rules of golf before they can play.

While I appreciate this may not be everyone's cup of tea and could be seen as another barrier to getting people into the game, it would at least teach people the basics. Football, rugby, etc all have rules that are obeyed and people seem to accept they need to learn them before playing (unless they're Premiership footballers of course ;) ).

Perhaps term roll up must mean different sorry, we have a system at our club before 9am you just roll up and play ( put a ball in a little shoot on the 1st tee )

So are there other people you could join up with so you're not stuck behind anyone as a single golfer?

I'm only thinking that I much prefer waiting for people in my group to take a shot than people ahead of me, so I would always try and join up if I could. Especially on a Saturday morning.

I'm not having a go, Matt, just trying to work out why you'd be a solo on a Saturday.

If you'd stopped at this point you'd probably get some genuine sympathy..
To tar all Seniors with the same brush when anyone of anyage is capable of doing what happened isn't going to help....
I am in the seniors myself but I know the rule of the game > I never said the young members do not hold people up but have never seen anyone go fishing on two holes while we waited on the tee. some thing else they did let a two through on the second hole but kept us waiting . No four should hold up a twoball its just not on no matter what age they are.

All ages and standards of golfer are as guilty as each other for slow play, it just seams that each category if golfer is guilty for the same type of slow play.

I have noticed with younger golfers it tends to be having a million practice swings, then deciding to change clubs before another million practice swings before hitting the ball. Also having to read putts from all 4 angles, I can understand it in competition, but when having a knock round is ridiculous.

Senior golfers tend to be slow just because they are not in a rush. What else do they have to do today? Prune the roses, watch countdown, maybe nip round to see the grandchildren. The ignorant ones seem to forget that some people are out trying to get a round in before going to work dodo not have all the time in the world.

i think the most annoying one though are the 4 balls that do not let you through as they are keeping pace with the 4 ball Infront. Thing is when you are in a 2 ball if they let you through then the 4 ball Infront of them will also let you through and you are gone. I hate the excuse of you are not going to get anywhere if we let you through.

In a word, no. You get idiots in all walks of life. Sometimes they are older and sometimes younger. Did you ever have an opportunity to ask if you could play through? I would have probably gone up and asked whilst he was fishing for balls.
I know one of them quite well and he said hello to me on the 4th he knows we are both cat 1 golfers and I just expected him to let us through. The one who was fishing was 250yds off the tee I think we were so shocked by it we were laughing but when he did it on the 7th as well we had to say something

Yes, clearly it would appear manners have deserted the game.

Not a word from them? What a surprise when you've been gobbing off from the tee.

Did either you or your mate have the decency/manners to thank them for allowing you to force your way through?
So your fourball would keep a twoball behind them while fishing for balls on two holes .you are the type that cause these problems And yes we did say thank you that's what my mum taught me to do a long time ago .. Unbelivable.

It could have been worst you could have been stuck behind ladies now thats a 6 hour round....

Only because you are likely to be unable to walk properly if you made such a stupid comment nearby some of the ones I know!

Only ever had a 'problem' behind Ladies once and would have had the same problem if we were behind a similar bunch of Men as well.

If you want to experience a 6 hour round, I can recommend a couple of 'female free' courses, where I'd probably be the only Senior on the course as well!

Just another example why the 'All generalisers are fools' statement is so true!
