being new to all this, im going to ask another stupid question are all golf balls different? at the moment im using some cheapy dunlop distance balls, would i notice any difference to my game if i was using say titleist balls or are all makes more or less the same.

At your level mate your using the right ball. Pointless paying the big bucks for a ball that your either going to lose or not get any benefit from.
Due to this its why im now playing knock off Xout Titleist and Warbirds.

John 74, if you are new to the game you probably are at least for the time being are using the right ball. Infact, Dunlop as far as budget balls go are not that bad a ball in its class. There are many budget balls worth using.

Many Amatures including myself, have a tendancy to use balls more expensive than we need to. And there are only two reasons for this one is a slightly different feel off the face of either putter, or other clubs. The second is vanity pure & simple.

I actually know a quite good player who plays just outside single figures & he still uses JJB Mitsubishi balls that are less than a fiver for 15 balls, he's more than happy with his choice.

Stick with the dunlop ball or similar at least for the time being. Don't be afraid to experiment, but once you find something else you like & is at the price you want to pay for balls, stay with it.

I have recently been using some of dunlops latest creations and unlike previous ones that had clear seams that affected run when putting and used to split in two easily, these new ones (xmas gift :() are not too bad for a knock about during this time of year. They wear out quickly though, casings seem weak and after a few hits they are very rough and tatty but if you change them two or three times in a round they are not bad for a cheap ball, they are called 'Quadra Link' The boast on the back of the pack regarding distance is simply that in my view as I didnt see any distance that made me think OOOO! But I did find the play around the greens and on the greens a lot better than some dunlops I have used in the past.

Slazenger do a very good cheap ball, reasonable for distance and performance elsewhere, I use them a lot these days.

You can do everything with a cheap ball that you can do with an expensive one, its the degree of performance in relationship to the players standard of play and more importantly, feel, that matters the most.

Until you improve your golf and feel for the game/balls there is nothing wrong with sticking to cheap balls. :D

I must admit to normally using Srixon's , Cally Warbirds or Wilson DX2's etc but was given a box of topflite XL5000's over xmas and have decided to try them out as i got them for nowt and it might be better to stick with a cheaper ball for the mo' as i'm not that good anyways.

Don't know if anyone has ever used them but will report back next time i play...so the way it's going for me , i'll be seeing you in June time :(

A good mate of mine who is a "natural" golfer (we liken him to Seve) plays off 8. He will play with the first ball that he pulls out of his bag. I've never known him buy a new sleeve of balls. It's not that he's tight, but as well as being a natural golfer he is a natural ball finder and during a round of golf will usually find at least half a dozen or more. He doesn't care whether they are old Balatas or DDH500's.
He once teed off the first with a bloody pink ball...."flying lady" or something. He proceeded to play the next 7 or 8 holes with it only dropping a couple of shots before he tonked it into the trees and couldn't be bothered to go and find it.

You will notice a difference even as a higher handicapper off the putter face. A hard ball will come out hotter than say a ProV or equivalent and the softer feel is one of the main reasons better players prefer a premium ball.

There are lots of budget balls out there so it may be worth looking at online stores and seeing if anyone has any deals and trying as many as you can and seeing if there is a make you have aprticular affinity with

seen a lad last week in a competition who was using a two piece distance ball of the tee and because it was clean and drop throughout he would hit the prov from there couldnt be arsed to say anything he never bothered the judge
