Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

Re: Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call later. I love the look of the 909, it's just a case of finding the right spec as you have.

Re: Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

I smacked one 255 at the weekend, but I would say my average was more like between 220 - 240

I did hit one 285 a month or so ago but that was wind assisted and downhill.

Re: Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

Played the Forest of Arden recently and hit one (wind-assisted) 340 yards according to the yardage book.

Too damn far! I was behind a tree and had to hack out!!

Re: Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

On our flatter holes I have measured from 265-340 (obviously 300+ is not an every day occurance otherwise Id be on the tour!), wind and general conditions play an awfully big part of how well it travels both in the air and along the ground.
I hit a high ball and get virtually no bounce forward, same for all of my woods and irons. My trajectory is not out of choice, just the way my swing is at the moment but have been trying to lower it a little with the longer irons.

Re: Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

The reason I know my distances is because i've measured every club using my SC. This was done in colder weather and all the distances were carry distances because the balls were plugging or just popping out (you know what I mean)

My drives if hit correctly will carry 265-275 yds flat and no wind. Adjust as necessary for different conditions.

All the other yardages are written in my little black book for reference when needed , however i'm so used to them now I hardly need to check.

Over the years i have seen adverts in the Mags which companies claim there Ball gives you increased Distance , Yet hitting off wit the wind at your back is going to give a longer driver that you would dream off . Yet under Normal Conditions have you really measured how long you can hit a ball .

Back to the question, as opposed to turning the whole thing into a thread on driver distance.... :D

I only use two factors to determine ball distance with a given club/ball. Everything up to 5 wood has been tested on the range (I have 20 Yellow balls in my bag amongst the 60-70). I will choose a club to measure (today it was an 8 iron) and only hit the yellow balls with that club. If it pops out the bag, it's an 8!!

As I collect the balls, I remove the right/left/long/short ones until I have 10-12 left. I then pace out my distance from the middle of the remaining group.

Out on the course, there are places I "expect to be" on certain holes with a good/clean/straight hit. This rarely changes over months and dozens of rounds. For example, on one hole (with a 5 wood), I'm never shorter than 140 to go and rarely longer than 120. I discount bad hits and whopper bounces.....

I "thought" I had yet to discover a really long ball. BUT, on Saturday, I found myself past the "expected" distances on quite a few occasion, not just holes in one wind-helping direction either. I was also through the back of 2 greens where I have never made this mistake.....
I'm not saying this ball is longer for everyone, but for me, I think I may have found a proper game-improving ball. I reached the SI 1. and 2. and that's good enough proof for me.

Re: Have far does your choosen Golf ball really go

I notice that the use of distance measuring thingys is introducing a certain technical verisimilitude into the willy waving here. :p :p :p

Just a query how do you know what you carry?

I know what my carry is because there are several holes on my course where I routinely aim straight over the bunkers and know that i will carry them. I've measured these with GPS, and from this I know that my regular carry with driver is at least 225. Conditions then dictate final resting place.

Its not difficult to get a decent idea of how much carry you get per club. I just wish someone would carry mine. :D

My driving distance/carry is a bit erratic...although thanks to Bobmac , its improving greatly ( including direction ) . I would guess at about 220 average although i did spank one over 270yds on saturday as it ended up right beside the 150yd marker on a 430yd hole . Pretty pleased with that one !!!

Ive been on google earth and plotted all my drives from today, taken the worst 5 and the best 5 and averaged it.
Difference was significant but consistant into the wind as was down wind. Now I know the google earth measure tool isnt perfect but based on my knowledge of the course and several known distances the google tool is reasonably accurate.

The result was an average drive today of 254 yds and as I hit 11 fairways today and fairway edge on 3 I think its a reasonable calculous. this was with a slazenger mid range cheapish ball.

Now what I want to know is WHY is this sort of question asked so often but rarely followed up with a reasoning or response and is it just another peeing contest subject to ridicule or disbelief?

I have taken the trouble to offer this info colin, so why do you wish to know please?

I borrowed a 909 D2 yesterday, in what I thought would be my ideal set up, 9.5 Voodoo stiff, and it was amazing. So solid, nice sound, nice feel, good length. Would I buy it, no. When I get home, I want to go to Brampton and get fit, because I think I want to get a driver that is bang on what I need, not what I think I need. That said, 909D2 9.5 Voodoo stiff rocked. Be interesting to see what they come up with.

Bob are you building a set of bagpipes ? ;)

They look a bit like tht dont they lol
Speaking of which.......
When I was a lad an older guy described my swing as an octopuss trying to make love to a set of bag pipes. He didn't know I was off 2 at the time :)
