Has this happened to you? What do I do?

Its not a typo! Thats one of the problems, my last lesson the pro said I was swinging better than he had seen me, and asked me if I loved or hated the game. I answered by saying "Im not sure" I am now, I hate the game! I know if I have more lessons it will probably sort it out in the short term but I know this will happen again and its not a gradual problem its either there or not, thats what helped me come to the quitting decision. It wouldnt be so bad if I could feel the specific problem but all I feel is everything is wrong! The pro also said it could be in my mind, and I am certainly not going down the route of a sports quack!

Its both, yesterday on the first tee (par 5) it took 14 shots to the green which was a mixture of topped shots that went about 10 yards left and nearly dead right push slices.

The pro also said it could be in my mind,

Of course it's in your bludy mind !!

If you don't enjoy it, rest by all means. But don't quit.

There are loads of blokes here that have given the game up for 10 years or more who now regret it.

I'm betting your problems are caused by something as simple as too much tension, or too much thinking.

Lower your expectations, and the bad stuff wont feel so bad, and the good stuff will feel better.

I'll bet you weren't as elated with the scores in the 80s as you were disapointed with the really high scores.

I know I can score a sub 80 round. But I actually end up desperately trying to break 100.

If I were unhappy with anything over 82, I'd give up the game. But I expect to score 90-95, so I treat it as a major surprise to score an 89 or so. Which happens once every blue moon.

So I'm often mildly disappointed, and occasionally outrageously sky-high-super-chuffed. Rather than feeling semi suicidal 9 times out of ten.

craphacker have you been watching me play? that's me almost to a T.

caslad you're too impatient. playing just over 3 months and expect it all to happen in five minutes. get used to it - it won't.
didn't you watch the Open? If it can happen to Rory it's a dead certainty it'll happen to you - in spades.

Have a month off mate, or even 2, dont swing, touch or think golf. Top up on porn and beer tokens and forget everything. then start again with a fresh sheet.

Many times ive seen my game progressing well, get to about 14/15/16 over then BOOOOOOOOOOM, game falls apart and it all goes tits up. Im having the same run at the moment but ive now worked out exactly the problem, Im thinking.

Most parts of the golf swing are body mechanics (so im told) so forget it, step away, and ahve a few months out. come back to a quiet game around a 9 hole fun course with no epxectations just for a giggle forgettting everything you have ever learned or played and i bet your old game is there.

I had a real bad game tuesday, all of my bad shots were shots i was thinking about, i rethought the hole round over a pint (how sad) on thursday, every shot i ruined was either thinking about a hazzard on that hole or trying to do something specific. if id just swung the dam club relaxed it wouldnt have been a problem.

DO NOT SELL YOUR KIT, you WILL come back and its twice as expensive to replace.

Thanks for all the advice, it makes sense! I am going to have some time off and start fresh I think. I have just had a short break away and feel better about myself. The comment about tension makes great sense and think it could be my greatest problem. We will see what the future brings. Thanks again for the great advice!
