Has golf given you a bad back?

played football for years and when I, turned 35,played in a pre season friendly injured my back, had a disc taken out,and my consultant advised me to take up golf, never looked back. not had any problems since.. :)

Iv played football for 28 years and i feel that this has given me a bad back not the golf.....Its probably the more common injury type i have in that it feels very stiff at the base of my back....To bend over at the waist at times is torture when i starighten up.
Im presuming that its from playing ball 95% and probably bad footwear 5%

Had a bit of back trouble picking The Boy out of a Tesco's trolley a few years ago but that was only a tweak - gone in 2-3 days. Luckily my back is probably the strongest part of me.

Now knees and ankles - thats a different story. Got 1 decent one left out of the 4. Rest are shot to sh.....

Had back problems in the past but work related. I've now changed the way I work by being more aware and not putting undue stress on my back.

I had a severe back problem during a weekend society, over 36 holes. On the Sunday at the 9th hole felt a twinge and by the 14th was so painful I couldn't even bend down to pick the ball out of the hole, so had to give up.

Went to Osteopath on the Monday and after a couple of treatments asked him if it would be ok to play in a comp the following weekend. He said there's no reason why not - you know how your body feels, and my particular injury wouldn't be aggravated by the golf swing. He went on to say that the motion of the golf swing, provided not too fast, would help.

Golfmmad.

I have also found golf helps a neck problem. Years ago (pre-golf) was told by an oesteopath that golf, walking and cycling are generally good for the body unlike raquet sports.
However I now have a knee problem that I think might be golf-related (doesn't hurt on the course, just afterwards!)

Just one more thing that some maybe overlooking also with the back issues.....
Anybody with little uns pottering about the house....I know that i do it out of habit but when i pick up my 2yr old boy your not thinking about posture and how to do it properly... Your normally going against all the laws of lifting something with weight.... i.e bending at the waist to pick them up , not bending the knees, not using the legs to lift the weight, rotating from the waist instead of moving the feet on the ground....Ill bet alot of these things could potentielly put the back under a load that its not designed for....Just a little food fo thought. :D

My upper back problems are caused by my poor posture at work. I slump over my keyboard/mouse which means that my lower back muscles (which are the stronger) aren't used so my upper back muscles take all the strain. Due to their weaker nature, they give in occassionally.

I had a go on the Wii Fit the other day and the one thing it showed me was my posture when standing. I lean fractionally forward which, once again, is no good for the back. It showed me that I should stand slightly 'taller' which dragged my centre of gravity back towards centre and did make me feel better 'musclularly' (I think I've just created a word there.........) :D
