Has golf given you a bad back?

My back is bad atm, but generally it's pretty good.
Not sure if it was golf related in all honesty, would love to say it wasn't but there is a 50 - 50 chance I guess.

I have seriously damaged my shoulder while playing golf but this was more due to fatigue and the bag I was carrying at the time.

I've suffered with back problems since I was 18. Funnily enough, taking up golf at 40 has helped no end. It's helped strengthen the back muscles and touch wood, I don't get totally laid up anywhere near as often as I did.

Being tall and stooped doesn't help, as this gves me neck problems with C5 and C6 getting stuck. That isn't golf related, just painful and inconvenient.

I have rotational issues though, leading to some of the muscles in my back being permanently knacked. (like having cramp 24 hours a day). That is caused by golf, as my physio says the only way to fix it is to stop playing. As a result, I don't hit it like I used to. (some might say that is a good thing).

Because of the above, I would rather not carry, or use a pull trolley.

Sounds kind of similar to me. Since i stopped playing as much football and training really hard for that, plus not going jumping off things on my mountain bike, i've been relatively injury free.

One thing that does bugger my back up is carrying a bag for any length of time. Not sure if this is because i'm tall, but all that stooping over to lift the bag can be no good. Since i got my trolley it's been much better.

I'm 30 and have had a bad back for 3 or 4 years.

My chiropractor tells me that it is my physiche (tall & skinny with a particularly long back) which causes the problem. I've been tested for AS (which Woosie suffered from) but it is not that.
I am therefore now strengthening my back in the gym.

Golf hasn't caused my bad back but it certainly doesn't help.
I need to stretch alot before & after rounds.

I get a sore back after going to the driving range and I also get a sore elbow from golf. As someone else said, it's slot less than I used to get mountain biking and playing other sports!

My back problems stem directly from golf , without a doubt. In 2004 during the 2nd round of the club champs I faced one of those awful bunker shots. I had to stand outside the bunker and stoop down really low to reach the ball. On hitting the shot I wrenched my back and knew i'd buggered it up straight away.

Next morning couldnt move and it took about 3 months to get properly mobile again. Ever since my back has been susceptible to all sorts of problems.

Never ever had a back problem before that and have had nothing but probs ever since

Yep had a bad back now for about 30 years but not golfing related.

I'm lucky that its only when I bend over, its OK to twist. So I have to bend me knees when I put my tee into the ground or pick up my ball. The thing is I have being doing it for so long now that it is second nature.

I have more problems weeding my garden, were I have to bend over, the sight of me last year laying full length on the grass pulling up weeds had the good lady wife in stitches.

Probably tempting fate here but had no back issues so far. My Dad has and as i'm getting on abit (35 this year) I am more careful about warming up before playing and have decised to stop carrying every day during the summer.

sometimes get lower back pain but it's not golf related, think I slump too much watching the idiot box.

also got a bad neck/shoulder - also not golf related just too much work on a pc. in fact golf makes it better, warms the muscles and frees the stiffness.

other one I get is a 'trapped nerve' beneath my right shoulder blade - that one's a b****r, can't get to it, can't stretch it.

they don't stop me playing though.

I'll just have to face it - I'm falling apart (I'll be as bad as drawboy soon!)

Had a bad back for years, lifting one of the kids out of the car, struggled with it for a few years with increasing frequency and severity of problems. Eventually had a micro-discectomy, basically removing the centre of the disc, and was pretty much an instant cure (had the op in April and was back on the rugby field the following september).

Had a bit of a relapse the day before The Belfry meet, playing footie with my teenage nephews :o

Generally the more active I am the less the back problem bothers me.
