Have to go at the end of June and will be spending the weekend.

Where are the best areas to stay ? any recommendations for bars / restaraunts ?

Top place to go to. I had a great break away. Try this place out:

http://www.hofbraeuhaus.de/

The beer starts flowing early morning and the oompah band starts playing at about 10 in the morning also. Worth going to it on a Sunday night as that is party night and it is packed to the rafters as all the farmers and the farm girls come into town wearing all the traditional dress. Also if I rememebr correctly maximilian strasse is really lively at night. To be honest I found all the bars and restuarants to be good.

Hope you have a great time, I am sure you will

Can't agree more with the above - had an awesome weekend there and going again for a wedding this summer. All the main beer houses are good fun, just beware of the steins as they'll get you hammered fast!

I remember those bloody things. In the hofbrauheus I loved wathching the ladies in the nice traditional wench outfits either selling pretzels or walking around with 4 steins in either hand. If you have picked up one of these glasses in there you would be very impressed with someone who can carry 4 in each hand.

It hasn't changed then

Worked there 20 years ago and agree Hofbrauehaus is a good shout. Also Schwaben is good for bars and restaurants. The English Gardens are worth a visit. Some great architecture in Munich, Marienplatz sticks in my mind for that. Another place to see is Dachau concentration camp. Well worth a visit.

Went there for a few days a couple years back to see Bayern play against Dortmund so didn't see to muchoutside the Allianz Arena, but the little I did experience has put it in my mind to revisit at some point in the not to distant future.

I can't remember the names but there were sone lovely restaurants and cracking bars we went to, must go back there soon to experience it properly.

Munich is one fantastic city and not just during Oktoberfest,I have been several times.

I always stay here http://www.hotel-eder.de/ near the Haupbahnhof but also just a 5 min walk from the centre of town.

Be sure to visit the many beer kellers and a must is the Viktualienmarkt.

I love the place, loads to do and see and the beer is to die for.Been as blootered as a skunk and not once had a hangover from it.

Been to watch football mainly and more so the 5-1 drubbing we gave Germany.

The day started out very nice looking at the buildings and history which then turned to the inside of bars and then became very blurred and the next thing I knew I was on a flight home.

Great few days, beautiful place, very friendly (before the game).

Very much this.

If you do nothing else, make sure you visit Dachau. One of the most haunting, but amazing experiences of my life.

Munich is my second favourite city in the world, behind Seattle. Absolutely awesome place.

Update :

I have just booked a 3 night trip to Munich early May with 2 pals.

Off to the Frühlingsfest and we also intend to take in the 1860 v Union Berlin game.

Wunderbar!!

Prost!!
