So today was our club Ryder cup, well England V the rest of the world. I saw it as a bit of fun but I was looking forward to it. Early start, I was on the range by half seven and on the putting green by eight. I felt really ready.

Off we go and I am, well not quite on fire but very hot. A good up and down at the second for a par and the first points for us (England), a good putt on the third to force the half and a solid two putt on four to do the same. Nothing for me on five but my partner kept us one up. We both lost our balls on six to go back level. On eight I lashed my three wood onto the green (219 par 3) and made par to put us up again and my partner pared the ninth to put us two up at the turn.

That was the end of my day, the wheels came off, I forgot everything, forgot that it was a bit of fun, forgot all the wise words from the forum, forgot to stay focused and worst of all I forgot how to swing. Two or three duffs on the fairway putting a mile past the hole, short right drives. When my drive goes off I know life is bad, I am soild off the tee even on my bad days.

My mental attitude sucked. I don’t get aggressive or anything like that but I could actually feel my head getting closer and closer to the ground. I totally let myself down again and I will just have a little moment of self pity here and say, it all feels like its slipping away. I work so hard but the last three weeks have felt like I am back playing off twenty eight. I really want to pack it in, but I can still remember how it feels to play well and I know my high is so high but this low is just as powerful.

Meh, I don’t know where to go from here. Sorry to be a moaning old fool but I am lost now.

Oh, we lost, two down. England drew with the rest of the world so they retain the cup, and a fine looking cup it is. The food and beer was good , the company was great, nice people.

The cup was won so you cant say you let the side down :). Good company, people and food. Thats what golf is about

Nil Desperandum Alex.

You did your bit in a TEAM competition. You can't say you didn't enjoy your front 9 as it looks like you played some good golf mate.
Shame about the back 9 but take the positives from the front and remember that section. Forget the back 9, remember the craic, banter, food and beer which are part and parcel of the game.
Why would anyone wish to give that up?

Playing opportunities will soon become less and less as the winter draws in. Take the opportunities to play, perhaps just get 9 holes in.
Come next season you'll be raring to go mate.

Head up Alex.....
There's not a worse feeling but try taking the positives.....As my ol man keeps telling me..." If we were that good every week we'd be on tv "
I went 8 straight weeks on the trot getting 0.1 back after getting cut nearly 2 shots......I was completely distraught.....
Then out of knowhere i shoot a nett 64 off my 18 handicap at the time and im on cloud 9.....Mind you it was back to 0.1's again after that :D
Funny ol game innit? ;)

It happens. I played a whole round with nothing but shanks and tops except for two holes where I came in. My partner carried me the whole way and we still took it to the 18th. I really wanted to just walk in part way round and the back nine was just sould destroying. It made me realise that my game could never plumb those depths again and so three figures in a medal is still a better day out than that.

Forget it and put it down to a bad day. You obviously played some good stuff early on. If you're that worried go to the range or practice ground tomorrow and hit a basket of balls and rebuild your confidence

Thanks, this helps.

What is twisting me up is that I am back here at the PC chatting Sh1t and there is nothing I can do about it till tomorrow.

Tomorrow is going to be a back to basics game. Pre shot routine, take every shot as I find it, 3/4 slow swing, playing for boggys. I need to get my head back in it.

More than anything I think making the post helped, and a hug and some dinner from HID.

Back to it, my god why did I not take fishing up!!

Thanks Homer, you been testing those clubs today? looking forward to the write up.

Absolutely. At the end of the day, at our level, the aim is to have a fun day. Our equivalent match always is and that is what is important about those matches not the result or individual performances (despite all the inevitable banter and ribbing). They're just incidental to the craic.

It is a rotten feeling on the course to be playing badly but when you've shaken hands on the last just try to put it behind you. Don't get down on yourself. It happens to all of us. Think about how some top players blew up in the majors this year. You'll play great again and experience that high. For now just be pleased to know that you were part of a great event.

I think the lovely ladies in our lives put up with the ups and downs of this game as much as we do. Mine hears all about it whenever I return from golf. I've burdened her with my disappointment when it's gone bad (quite often this season!). Even though she has no interest in the game she patiently listens to my tales when my game has gone well (including the actions replayed in the kitchen without the club and ball)
Whenever I leave home to go and play she always tells me to play well and enjoy myself.
Ahhhh, happy days. :)

my god why did I not take fishing up!!

Leave it mate. I packed in fishing when I took up golf. The wife's happier as I'm usually only out of the house around 5 hours. Fishing wise, out of the house around 6am, back home at 10pm. Dump smelly nets and tackle in the garage then enter the house smelling like somebodies garden pond.

Get a good nights sleep Alex......get up fresh and just go out and enjoy the game.......Dont even try a bring home a good score you'll be so relaxed ill bet you'll tear the course up..... ;)

I know how you feel.

I was so bad last week my head went down and that's not like me. I actually didn't want to be there, and would've gladly walked off after 9 if my partners had suggested it, although I'd never suggest it myself.

My head went to the stage that around the turn I was trying to putt anything inside 3' with one hand and missed a few.

I feel like I let myself down and have promised myself it won't happen again. We'll see.

Weve all been there Alex however the real winners are the ones who come back stronger, and im sure your one of them. You played your part by being there in the first place.Just enjoy the game, work on the mental side and im sure you will be stronger next time.

Chin Up Al

Its just the Golfing Gods messing with you.
Smile and show 'em the finger. Tomorrow's another day!

I just love this approach :D

Alex, dont beat yourself up mate, try not to overthink for a round or two, just relax and have fun and accept whatever happens happens. If you get too upset by the bad days this game will eat you up (been there as have most at some stage!)

If you want to chew that fat, hit a few balls then grab a beer after one night let me know

Will do mate, that sounds cool.

Little better today

Todays Card <--Link

There is something wrong with my swing though, I am hitting mostly fat shots so must be dipping or something, also most seems to have a little slice. I think I need a tweak or something. I know you guys have told me if I am getting fat shots then it may be my weight tranfer. Drove short all day again and some duffs so I have picked up something nasty.

My striking has been awesome since I posted my vid on here and you guys helped me but now my swing thought or something is killing me.

Anyway, what a WONDERFUL sunny day. Met a guy on the 1st and we played together, totaly cool guy and by the end of the day (slowest round ever) we were high fiving on good putts and stuff. A better day but some things to work on. At least now I know that something is wrong, and I can work on it.

Thank you all for your support.

Al, great to see you turned it round :D, that is one hell of a FIR stat!!! Maybe it was the competition you were playing in that affected your mind set on Saturday. Hope you resolve the issues with the fats soon.
