American in origin.... especially in New York with a sizable Jewish community. The seven day festival of "Chanukah" overlaps Christmas and there was a way of saying "Whatto!" to everyone at once... also "holiday" in America means something different from in UK! Diwali and Eid aren't far away either, so happy hols seems to cover everyone....
Of course there is an element in the UK who are scared of offending anyone so say "happy holidays" in case Jews , Muslims etc are offended by the word Christmas... which of course none actually are. I've been in plenty of Jewish and Muslim households where you'll see Christmas Trees with prezzies underneath.
When in Rome eh?
So, the only people worried by this are people who've gone too far Left or too far Right! Mind you, isn't saying "Holidays" just to prove a point is a little silly!
Merry Christmas everyone! May your G-d go with you! (D Allen RIP)
