I walked past a shop today with 'Happy Holidays' across the window.

Does anyone else dislike this PC substitute . Are there any substantial numbers in this Country that are offended by "Merry Christmas' ?

I'm not offended by it, but in some ways I'd consider Happy Holidays more appropriate as the message of "Peace on Earth, Good will to all men" seems to have long since vanished, and that is what I understood Christmas to be about.

The term has come about by the PC brigade not wanting to offend ethnic minorities. Am I offended by their celebrations, absolutely not. How can 'Holidays' be a sensible description to the Christmas season. I dont know about you but 'Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all men' for me is much better but a simple 'Merry Christmas' if just fine.

To be honest I dislike it immensely. It is Christmas and that's what it should read as. It's another Americanism that's made it over this side of the pond.

It's like something you would read in the Daily Mail ! Call it whatever you want , of all the things in the world to worry about

Does it really matter at the end of the day - have heard it called Happy Holidays for years now

Worry about  Who's worried about it, I just dont like it and cant see why it's called Holidays. I prefer my holidays in the summer.

Possibly because there are several "holidays" through December. I'm sure the shop in question just wanted to wish a Happy Holiday to everyone, rather than just a significant percentage. Nobody's offended, it's just good manners really.

It's Happy Christmas! Anything else is total Pc rollax of the first water. If you don't like a holiday celebrated in the U.K. for X long, tough.

Hey - I don't really like the use of Xmas - but it doesn't upset me.

It's all just a glorified excuse to spend stupid amounts of money and eat and drink far too much and then spend the next 11 months paying off the credit card just in time to start all over again.
As for what to call it, call it what you want as for most folk it's got nothing to do with religion any more

Which does (unfortunately IMO) seem to be the case

Probably more a case of no one really bothering about religion anymore.

Yes, religion historically was a way to control people, make them conform through fear - 'Do as we say'. You had to go to church in this country only a few decades ago or else be made a pariah of the community. Thankfully we can all have opinions nowadays and speak more freely without being judged or called heretics and then killed. Religion does do a lot of good for people in many parts of the world but you should only get involved if you are drawn to it naturally, not be forced. You can have moral guidance without religion imo.
I don't like the way many of those in public office choose to portray a Christian belief as it fits their role, too scared to say they are athiests or agnostics.
Evolution will do away with organised religion over time, consign it to history, think that's inevitable.
Christmas for many here, most even, is just a holiday now, it did incorporate a lot of pagan and pre christian winter traditions for fun anyway even when it was more religious event. A lot of things like the wise men and gift giving and Jesus not having an 'earthly' father rather a divine one is pretty far fetched even for the Bible.....imo.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Like a big proportion of British people I don't do the religion bit so to me it better encapsulates what actually happens. A few days off, much deserved family time, a party or two and a chance to socialise. I can see how some may be worried that it's another step away from that 1950's utopia....but hey-ho I'm not that paranoid.
