Hi All,

Just a quick question. I am back playing golf after about 10 years away from the game or just playing on or off.
My previous club i had a handicap of 10 but now i have joined another local club would my old handicap still stand or would i have to submit 3 new cards?

Cheers
Brendan

I would suggest you would have to submit 3 x new cards to gain an offical handicap as it has been so long.

However, best bet is to speak to the Club secretary.

Welcome back.

Would you not want a new handicap regardless???

After 10yrs away you surely cant play at the same level you were at, and if you dont get a new handicap how are you going to compete in any of the comps?

This is an unrelated question but still relevant to handicaps. As a newbie, how do you get an actual handicap? I know that sounds strange but I honestly don't know the procedure. Also, what sort of scores do I need to be getting to before considering trying for one?

The most common way is to join a golf club, you play 3 rounds with another member who will sign your card with you, submit the 3 cards to the club secretary and you will be given an official handicap.

You dont need to be getting to any scores to get a handicap, but the chances are if you went now you would get 28, but then you have a goal to get it lowered by as much as possible as soon as possible!

Re the OP's original question. You will have to hand 3 cards in to obtain a new handicap. I am going through the same thing at the moment, last "official" handicap was in 2000, been a nomad golfer since then and have recently joined a club. They won't even consider my old handicap as 9 years have lapsed since then, despite the fact that I have been playing in society golf to it over the years.

Fortunatly i have stayed in touch with the game just not being a member of any club.

The problem being i won an invitational event last year and was given an 18 handicap for it. And there was uproar when people found out that i use to play off 10 and i had to forfeit first prize as a good will jesture.

So you can see whats got me thinking.

As for getting getting a handicap just submit 3 score cards signed by members ina stoke event.

Cheers

Doesnt have to be an event, just someone who is a member marking your score is all that is usually required. ;)
don't you have to play off the competition tees
Yep, I do believe so. I was advised that I ad to play off the whites with a fellow member marking my card for me.

I joined in March, and have only just played my 3rd full round of 18 on Sunday, I should find out my handicap tomorrow

No, you can play off the yellows, or any other tee (except ladies tees obviously) as long as you indicate this clearly on your card, and a separate SSS is registered for the course (off of those particular tees.)

Err

Make sure the member who is marking your cards has a handicap to.

This is a stipulation at my club and could be at yours
