Hi Guys. Played in a mixed competion at the weekend. 2 ball better ball Stalbeford where the handicap was 90 percent. Is this normal and if so why? cheers

Yes, I realise that and understand why in matchplay. Why should there be any change of handicap in Stableford where you are playing against the whole field and not individual or pair?

Because the expected score for an 18hc goes down by more than the expected score for a 9hc if you give them 2 goes at it.

Just guessing at numbers....
Expected score for an 18hc on a par 4 is 5.
Expected score for a 9hc on a par 4 is 4.5.

Give them 2 goes (or 2 same hc's playing as a better ball pair).

The 18's might have an expected score of 4.5 (down 0.5) and the 9's 4.2 (down 0.3).

Like I said, guessing at the numbers, but as far as I know that's the principle behind not playing off full hc in team comps.

Nice try!

The simple answer is that it's normal, but that doesn't mean it's right.

It's a non qualifying format so it doesn't matter either - just accept or don't play.

Where is my logic flawed?

When there is a finite best score, the more goes you give to 2 players of differing abilities the closer together their best scores will be.

I've never been part of an eclectic competition, but are they run off full handicap?

For exactly the same reason as in Matchplay! It's the fact that there are 2 of you, so, deemed, greater likelihood of scoring well on each hole! I'm not a great fan of the logic, but..... As has been posted, Rules/CofCs should be published alongside in conjunction with the entry. Either Enter knowing & accepting them or Don't Enter - but Entering, then complaining about them isn't 'the done thing' imo (not that I'm implying you did that mind)!
