Handicap- Stableford question

Hi Guys

Just came into my mind the other day while on my holibags. Where does a +1 handicap give his shot back to the course in a stableford competition? It just seems strange that a one handicap would get his shot at SI 1 and a +1 hcp would give the course a shot on the same hole. Or does he give the course it's shot back at SI 18, where it would seem a bit fairer.

Yes he would have to birdie the si 18, I hasten to add this is not my problem
