Handicap review dilemma

Hi guys, I have a bit of a predicament.
I currently play off 8.6 but just cannot get anywhere near my handicap.

I got my handicap last year at my last club in a way in which I wasn't too happy. I handed in 3 cards and after the handicap secretary had a chat (how much golf will you play this year/what do you normally shoot etc) he put me off a handicap which was the best round of my life. My cards were something like 80, 83, 86. Par 72. I got 8.0.

Now it was carried over to my new club this year but I haven't really got anywhere near it. I have the odd good round where I get 33 points but normally it's late 20's, maybe a 31 now and again.

Because I only played 3 qualifiers last season I can put in supplementaries for handicap adjustments. Also I can ask for a review anytime.
I do like the idea of being a single figure golfer but if I'm honest to myself I'm not quite there.

Now do I sacrifice the 'single figure' title and ask for a review and hand in supplementaries or should I weather the storm and hope for an improvement in my game and see if I can play to it??

Just don't know what to do as I'm torn between the two.
 
I would ask for a review mate. Otherwise, every time you tee up you're going to be thinking about trying to play to your handicap which will hinder you.

As my weird welsh neighbour said last night when describing the difficulty of golf to my other weird neighbour: "It's the hardest game in the world and you either need to be really really smart and learn to not think, or totally dull; because once you start thinking, you've had it".

I dont know......if you dont play in qualifiers then your HC isn’t going to move much is it. They probably gave you the right HC and I cant see you getting anywhere with a review if you don’t play many Q comps. Now, if you were playing more Q comps then a review could be valid but wouldnt be needed as your HC would go up anyway.

Another thing, too many players think they should play to their HC more regular than they really can.
 
Tommo, since I joined my new club I have played about 5 qualifiers this year, plus plenty of bounce games with the lads for a few quid and I just don't seem to get near it often.

If I was to ask for review I was hoping to maybe get a shot back making me 9.6 then if I hand in 10 supplementaries as well as playing the comps then I'm hoping my handicap will level out with a review again at the end of the season.

On the other hand I really don't want to give up my single figure status! Aarrrgghh!! :o
 
Jammy I have to agree. Been mulling it over this afternoon and I emailed the handicap secretary asking for a review.

I think I'd rather have a handicap I can play to more often than one I am always chasing and not achieving.

Here's hoping to a more reflective and accurate handicap! 18 would do! :D

Ah, thats okay. You'll just need a spark that'll set your game off. I know what you mean about single figures, it's a target on the way to better golf. I want to stay cat 1 but it's a fight. However, dont let that cloud the situation and just play as many comps as pos.
 
Had a response back from the handicap secretary who is going to have a look at my comp results and make an assessment.

I'll stick to my word with him and hand in 10 supplementaries which I can do (due to low number of qualifiers last season) so I'm hoping by the end of the summer my handicap will be an accurate reflection of my ability :)

Fingers crossed to a more enjoyable golf :)
 
With the season just underway, I'd have thought you're not likely to get a review now. Most clubs do the annual review early in the year.

I believe you can have a review anytime but if you ask for one all the time I can imagine they'd get annoyed with you.
