Handicap Question

OK, here's one for everyone.

We have a couple of two round competitions at this time of year with rounds being played on consecutive Saturdays.

So, first question. Does your handicap remain the same for both rounds of the competition or is it adjusted based on your performance in round one and then again in round two?

And second question. Between rounds one and two of the current competition, there is a mid-week medal. So, would your handicap be adjusted for the second round based on the mid-week medal?

Id of thought your handicap would remain the same for both Saturday's as it's still the same competition. As for the midweek medal that in turn will be the same as the first saturday comp then after the 2nd saturday comp your handicap should be adjusted as normal for 2 comps results.

I could be stood corrected but that's the logical suggestion from what I can see.

Your h/c will be adjusted after every round,if you play a two round comp. on the same day your h/c will be adjusted after the second round.

Are you allowed to play on the course between rounds or a 2 round comp?
Had this problem a few years back during Club Championship. PLayed Round 1 on Saturday, 2 Guys had to play a K/O Matchplay Saturday pm and then 2nd round CC on Sunday - not technically allowed.

If there's a week between rounds of the same comp - not sure you are allowed to play in between.....?

Correct they should not have been allowed to play two differant comps. on the same day.

You can play as many rounds as you want between rounds comp.or otherwise.

Had a look at the Rule - can't play between rounds when the Comp is on consecutive days so you're OK!!

Knob Think you knew I meant you could play in midweek rounds between comp. a week apart.

HRC99, reading the help manual that goes with the Club 2000 system (used to process handicaps and competitions at my club) it states:

The second or subsequent round of a multiple round competition may be played off the same handicap as that used in the first round for score sheet purposes, but the handicap calculations are always performed off the 'actual’ handicap.

36 Hole score sheets require that the second round results are calculated off the same handicap as that which the player began the first round off. Setting up the second round to refer back to the first round will ensure that this happens.
Handicap calculations will ALWAYS occur off the actual playing handicap for each round. The individual rounds are treated as standard competitions for handicapping purposes. This effective difference in result calculation can create some differences between the second round score sheet and the player's Handicap Record.
Note: The same methods and rules apply to 54, 72 or any multiple round competitions

The way this reads to me is that even though you play off the same handicap in each competition round, your handicap will be adjusted after all the rounds have been played with each round being processed individually.

In the case of a mid-week medal taking place between the two rounds, your handicap would change based on your score and would take effect immediately after that round - with the exception of the second round of the two round competition where your handicap would remain the same as that for your first round.

Yes, on both counts, which goes to show why running a 36 hole comp over two rounds a week apart is a complete nonsense and your committee should have a serious look at themselves.

I take the point and, at the very least, there should not be a mid-week medal between the two rounds. There are quite a lot of members who will play either Saturday or Sunday but not both. The idea being that, having the competition over two weekends, maximises involvement by members.

Which is fair enough in my book but scheduling a mid-week medal is just plain daft.

So handicaps are updated every competition then? I didnt realise, I presumed that a handicap would stand for a set period, ( a month, three months etc) how long does a handicap last if after you stop entering competitions? For instance over the winter?

Your handicap is adjusted (or not) on every "qualifying" round that you complete. You must complete 3 rounds to maintain an active handicap in a year.

Thanks HRC, I just didnt realise a handicap could be updated so regularly. I wont be bothering with a handicap until the summer arrives and after lots more practice, and lessons.

Nah, just get stuck in. It doesn't matter what you shoot but just gaining the experience and playing with others will teach you so much and stand you in good stead for the future.

Just get out there, get a card in your hand and enjoy the summer season!
