I'm playing in a betterball comp next Wednesday afternoon at Fulford and we've got a mid-week medal at my home course that day too.

I haven't played in an individual comp for a couple of weeks so was thinking about teeing off bright and early in the medal before heading over to Fulford for the betterball comp in the afternoon.

I was just wondering if (and a big if) I was to beat my handicap in the morning, should I cut myself in the afternoon?

Betterball is not a singles competition, so doesn't result in an automatic handicap adjustment, but could be taken into account for general play. Unless you marked every hole to completion and handed it in. Even so, I think it would have to be considered by the committee and that would take time. Play your afternoon round off the handicap you started the day with.

It's your responsibility to play to the correct handicap. If you have a good medal round in the morning you should adjust your handicap for the afternoon's 4BBB. You will be Dq'd if you play off a higher handicap, but you won't be if you play off a lower one.

Don't agree. If he plays a strokeplay comp in the morning, plays a blinder and returns a low score then he has to review that score against SSS and make any downward adjustment accordingly.

Only the Hcp sec can review it upwards though ;)

Quite right. It is the PLAYERS responsibility to know his own handicap and he should adjust down based on the SSS score of the course played (assuming the CSS won't be available) before playing in the 4BBB. If he doesn't do this and subsequently is cut then he would have to DQ himself from the 4BBB for playing off the wrong h'cap.

Fyldewhite is right. A similar question was was posed on the forum recently and here is the extract from the CONGU procedure (20.11) that covers just this scenario:-

20.11 If a player returns a Qualifying Score or Scores below his Playing Handicap at his Home Club or away and is unable to:

1. (a) report an away score(s) to his Home Club or
2. (b) ascertain whether or not his Playing Handicap has been reduced as a result of the score(s)

he shall, before playing in another competition at his Home Club or away, for that competition make such reduction to his Playing Handicap as shall be appropriate under the UHS (Unified Handicapping System) by applying the Competition Scratch Score if known, otherwise the Standard Scratch Score, to calculate his Nett Differential and handicap reduction.

Should a player not know his Exact Handicap, such reduction should be made from his Playing Handicap less 0.5, (e.g. if Playing Handicap is 16 then reduction should be from 15.5).

Note: Handicap reductions only shall be applied under this sub-clause. Handicap increases may only be made by a player's Home Club after scores have been duly reported.

Thanks for all the replies. All moot now, as the betterball comp is at 12:18 at Fulford and I'd never be able to fit both in during the day. Shame. :)

What would have happened though if the self-calculated change was done on the SSS, the 2nd round was played with this adjusted hcap, and then the CSS was calculated to be higher than the SSS, which would mean the hcap reduction wouldn't have been enough?

There would be no problem.
If the CSS isn't know, he/she adjusts as per SSS.
I'ts interesting how many people get this wrong
