Hi guys i play with a great group of guys on the weekend we all have a range of handicaps from 7 to 26. None of us enter the comps as we just play our own game for a few pounds in kitty. We always fill score cards in and play to the rules. I have been doing very well in the scoring could i hand the cards in for a handicap reduction or not? Some people say yes and some say now can anyone help me here

You can but only if you have informed the Committee that you are doing so.
This is a Supplementary card and if you play well you'll get cut but if you don't then you go up 0.1
I think you can put in up to 10 per year but no more than 1 per week

Or people would only be handing in the reductions.

some people i know would only hand in the increase ones believe me. When i asked about this one guy said to me keep your mouth shut or you will get cut. My reply was im playing to improve not to be a bandit he walked off and grizzled to himself

The important part is informing the committee in advance of playing.

Winning stuff has never really interested me though as the player with the lowest gross is still better than me. My aim is to be the best (achievable or not).

To play a supplementary you have to declare to the commitee/pro shop before hand and return the card regardless whether it's good or bad. This also means your good cards from past weeks ate not admissible for any cuts.

So why not enter the competitions ? If comps are available you should be playing them to give a true reflection of your handicap.

And if your filling scorecards in and playing to the rules then why not enter the comps as then youve best of both worlds, beating your mates and also getting cut and even money from the club comps? Win win situation youve got there mate!

I really dont get this.
You dont play in comps which is fair enough, some dont want to, but by all means hand in the cards.
The handicap sec probably wont cut you BUT he should keep them for future reference if you do start playing comps and hoovering up the prizes.
The more information the han/sec has on your golfing history, the better informed he will be to give you an accurate handicap.
