Last Saturday, off 21 (21.1 exact), I played in a comp at my club. I shot nett 68 against par 70. I expected a 0.8 cut as a result due to the difference between my nett score and the CSS, which I expected to be 70 also.

The CSS was returned as 69, and yet I got a 1.1 cut in HDID to 20 exact; looking at the noticeboard today I saw that my handicap has been subject to a stableford score adjustment. My stableford points total for Saturday was 26/14 = 40 total.

Today I played in another comp, also at my own club. I wasn't so good today, shooting nett 70, which all things considered was a decent return. When I left, the estimated CSS was 70, and I don't think it will change. Today I scored 22/14 = 36 total.

I was wondering then how stableford adjustment worked vs course CSS?

No run of form to speak of prior to last Saturday, best competition round had been up until that point 94.

Last Saturday, I only had 2 real blow-out holes - a 7 on a par-3, and going one worse on a par-4, both on the back nine.
Today, only 1 blow-out, a 7 on a par-4 - again on the back nine.

Depending on the SI for the 2 holes the 7 could of been made a 6 and the 8 a 7 meaning you were nett 66 -3 meaning 2x 0.4 and a 0.3 cut totalling your 1.1.

Well played!

Sadly, the big numbers came at 2 of the easiest holes on the course , the 12th (SI 17) and 13th (SI 14). Today's biggie also came at the 13th, which is fast becoming a bogey hole for me.

Still, I did birdie the par-5 9th (first time for that!) and parred the tough uphill 14th (SI 2) - first time I've done that as well, as well as parring the par-5 18th as well to add to other pars on the 1st and 8th, so not all bad.

Thanks for the explanation too, I had wondered why the cut was so big, when I wasn't expecting such.

Definite rounding, the only reason the shots wouldn't of been taken off were if the holes were SI 1,2 or 3 in your scenario as they would of been nett doubles already, the stable ford adjustment note is because of the rounding.

Stableford adjustment reduces any large numbers to a net double bogey - zero points Stableford.

If you are used to scoring in Stableford, then 38 points or more will guarantee you a cut - as CSS can reduce by 1 = 47 points at your place (Par 70, SSS 70).

Your 1.1 came from being 3 better than the 37 points (effectively) 2 of 0.4 as you ere Cat 4, then 1 of 0.3 as the first 2 put into that Cat.

indeed your 7 at the par 3 12th, and 8 at the par 4 13th will both get a stableford adjustment of -1, so for handicapping, you have a 68-2=66 against 69 = net differential of 3 as happened

it's much easier to simply translate a medal card you have some 'large scores' on to stableford, as you did. par 70/CSS69 makes for a target of 37 points=CSS 40-37 gives you (fortunately!) the same -3 differential.

great round!
